We’ve bought HP Probook 4540s that comes with SLED preinstalled.
However it doesn’t seem there is a way to install any more programmes other than preinstalled ones. And we still need to add a few more. The repository is showing HP and unregistered. I am not quite sure if the user is suppose to only register or if any additional payment is required to install any other software. Surely the SLED repositories are not so small.
The thing is we need a few things and they don’t seem to be easilly done in SLED. Such as AMD GPU proprietary drivers (not sure yet if they came preinstalled or not), Thunderbird, video codecs and Wine (for one MS programme). The older and stable packages are not an issue, but it would be nice to have an easy way for installing programmes (i know there is YaST but as mentioned there are no repositories in it).
So if the computer is compatible with SLED does that mean that OpenSUSE will also work out of the box on it? Or do they add some special drivers and such to these HP laptops?
Also what version of OpenSUSE would you suggest? the latest? Tumbleweed or what? note we need first and foremost stability (older packages are not an issue) & security.

then you need to get to the correct forum where the SLED folks should
guide you…
this same post into one of the SLED forums at
https://forums.suse.com/forumdisplay.php?9-SUSE-Linux-Enterprise-Desktop
should be your next stop…
they can answer all your questions about how to activate your access
to the SLED repos and etc etc etc…
the pass and ID you used to access the openSUSE forums will work there…
imo, if you want stable then you need to stick to the enterprise
distribution. (i won’t run the latest openSUSE [12.3] because it is
not nearly stable enough for me)

Our openSUSE forum moderator who uses SLED is also away on vacation currently, so it may also be some time before you obtain a response on openSUSE forums (as the repository structure for openSUSE is significantly different for that from SLED/SLES).
… although having typed that I note for video codecs under the Packman Index of /suse/ there is an SLE-11 and an SLE-11 sp1 repository … where one of those with correct syntax may be correct in your case. But this is speculation on my part, and likely you will obtain superior support from a SLED/SLES forum (as noted by DD) or by waiting until our knowledgeable moderator returns.
