I have been struggling with getting my hp psc M1522nf to be recognized and stay recognized.
SuSE 11.0, hp pscM1522nf. Installed once w/ cups, worked, firefox failed and the printer locked up. De-installed printer via yast then reinstalled and YaST2 locks up with message “Load current setting @ 60%” completion. I can only get the window back by “killall y2base”.
I was able to print by “cat foo.ps > /dev/usb/lp0” until I had time to work the problem.
Then I used gimp w/ scanner, which worked, but directory “/dev/usb/” disappeared.
De-installed hplip and reinstalled w/ yast.
Ran <hp-setup> and got the message
error: HPMUDEXT could not be loaded. Please check HPLIP installation.

I don’t know whether any of this applies to you but I have an HP6980 and got
hplip from http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html. The
instructions need to be followed regarding disabling the cd repository and
then YAST before running the hplip shell. I’ve also found only one version
of the shell will compile under make [hplip-2.8.6.run] - they’re now on
3.9.2! Dunno how their version numbers work as they seem to have jumped from
about 2.8.12 straight to 3.9.x.

sort’a successfully. I am now able to print from Open Office and can use the scanner from Xsane/Gimp. BUT, I can’t print from firefox or from Apache acroread 8.0. The latter two system lock up and terminate when I try to print from them. Apache/acroread only indicates that there is an <lp> printer; no recognition of
<HP_LaserJet_M1522nf_MFP> seen by OO.
Furthermore, cups seems to have gone AWOL now where to be found.
