Hello colleagues, I am a user of Win 7-4 at 64 bit, with a newest parallel installation of OpenSuse 11.4.
After closing the lid of the monitor, and reverting back to computer after an hour, it cannot be wakened up at all. I remember that it was set on hybernation or suspend on closing the monitor, and that Ctrl+Alt+Del would wake it. But to no avail. Only the CAP and blocknum are flashing.
I am really desperate because I find no way to wake it, or even to enter into Windows at least.

When the caps and numlock keys are flashing at 1 Hz, that is the signal that a
kernel panic has occurred. This action is taken for errors for which trying to
continue might cause harm to the file system, or have some other major negative
outcome. There is no reawakening it. You need to hold the power button until it
powers off.
You need to file a bug report on this issue. In the meantime, change the setting
to either lock the screen or turn off the screen when the lid is closed. Please
note the current setting so that you can include that in the bug report.
Hello lwfinger, many thanks for your instructions.
Meanwhile, I succeeded to resolve the block of the laptop, so before explaining about possible adjustments on power management on HP Pavillion dv7, let me inform how I resolved what you correctly called “cernel panic”:
I unplugged all accessories and the AC cord.
took out the battery and replaced it. This was some kind of reset of a laptop, at least from the energy point of view.
My previous power management settings were:
-when on AC: performance
power profile: dim display 2 min, screen shut of 2 min, suspend 5 min (sleep), button event when lid closed: sleep, when power button pressed: prompt.
What differed from what “PowerDevil” configured automatically is presence of suspension, but this was not crucial, because of the lid closing > default sleep, did not work on subsequent smaller adjustments.
What worked is: when lid closed: hibernate, power button: shut down, but this power button feature wasn’t important in this problem.
(the power button-shutdown was not crucial, because pressing it, provoked normally a necessary wake-up from hibernation into a new session, not a real restart. So this was correctly said: a hibernation. Most possibly the action “prompt” after pressing the power button might also work well and with larger choice of options, as you suggested, but I simply didn’t arrive to this setup, having made 4 attempts.
Maybe also a shutdown after lid closing is a neat solution. Forgetting to go to the launcher in order to choose the next action, one finishes his session and closes the lid inadvertently, and the machine safely shuts down. I have to try this.
The conclusion is: closing of the lid to provoke defaulted sleep, as suggested by PowerDevil - doesn’t work. I better even not try to experiment with automatic “suspend”, no need for it really in any kind of session: power saving, extra power saving or AC.
