Welcome to openSUSE Linux and welcome to our forum.
There are different possible configurations of the HP Pavilion dv5 1160s, so we need to know what:
openSUSE will come (on the installation CD/DVD) with a set of openSource drivers (called openGL) that might work with average/moderate performance with your hardware. But those drivers may not work. I don’t know as I do not know what hardware comes with your laptop.
Reference your graphics, if ATI graphics, its possible you may need to install with a low resolution (800x600) or by selecting “VESA” when installing. If your dv5 has an Intel 4500GM graphics, it could be difficult to get the graphics running in anything but openSUSE-11.1 (with the 2.6.27 kernel), and even 11.1 may not work well. Other graphics should work ok. What do you have?
Its best you install with a wired connection, and then try to sort your wireless later. Setting up wireless is typically very difficult for new openSUSE users.
Can you provide more information?
First, thanks for your fast reply, secon i can say you what i know in these moment for my computer but if not be complet for you i can tray to find all configuration questions.
There is a intel core 2 duo 2,27 gh with 4 gb memory, 320 gb of hard drive, the grafic adapter is a nvidia geforce 9600 GT mobile of 512 mb of dedicate memory and extensive to 1700 mb i think, de sound chipset i dont know in these moment but y can tray to find it.
Another time, thanks for your fast reply.
Thanks.
The cpu (intel core 2 duo 2.27 ghz) should work (drivers automatically installed with installation). The same is true with 4GB of memory and the 320 GB hard drive.
The nVidia geForce 9600 should work immediately with either VESA driver or openGL driver, both of which come with openSUSE CD/DVD. Best performance will come with nVidia driver which you will to install later.
This can be difficult to find out. Do you have Linux installed on this laptop now ? It is possible the audio hardware codec is an IDT92HD71B7X (ie a STAC92XX) and a purported workaround to get the sound working is to add a line at the end of one’s /etc/modprobe.d/sound file: options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 . [Note alsa sound driver comes with openSUSE installation CD/DVD]
Also, I note one user with an dv5-1002 required a special acpi parameter to boot openSUSE-11.0 (disabling acpi). But I do not know how applicable that is to all dv5 laptops.
A lot of thanks for your aport. I go to tray to make what you say me. if i have another problem i post it hear. a lot of thanks.
