HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a - Will it Work on OenSuse?

Hi all!

I’m planning to buy a HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer - N911a from a Colombian website and I have two problems:

  1. I’m not sure that it will work well on opensuse… I saw that many users had problems during installation and I’m affraid that I will not be able to use it
  2. The price is in Colombian pesos (230000) and I’m not very sure what it means that… I converted this money on an online convertor and it says it’s about 115 USD (Convert 230000 Colombian Peso to US Dollar - 230000 COP to USD Exchange Rates) but I don’t know if I should trut that or not… it seems way too cheap:\

Welcome to the forums

If you add hplip after you have installed openSUSE 12.3, you will find the following printer drivers are available:

/usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-officejet_pro_8600-hpijs.ppd.gz
/usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-officejet_pro_8600.ppd.gz
/usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-officejet_pro_k8600-hpijs.ppd.gz
/usr/share/cups/model/manufacturer-PPDs/hplip/hp-officejet_pro_k8600.ppd.gz

So I think the answer should be Yes.

If you are new to openSUSE, do read the various information about openSUSE before you install it.

This is one place where I go to try to obtain information on HP support for printers under GNU/Linux: HP Linux Imaging and Printing

Assuming I picked the correct printer, this could be it here: HP OfficeJet Pro 8600

… if that is the correct printer then according to that it should work.

I own it and I can confirm that it works perfectly in Linux and openSUSE.
As john_hudson stated, you have to install the hplip packages.
I connect it via wireless network without any problem.
Printer, fax and scanner are perfectly recognised.
The installation is pretty simple: run the hp-setup command from CLI and follow the instructions on the screen.
In general hplip is very well supported in Linux.
It even has its own site:
https://launchpad.net/hplip

I may have picked the wrong HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 variant. This here may be your contemplated printer instead: HP Officejet Pro 8600 E-aio n911a where I note that is also reported as working with openSUSE.

I have this exact printer, it works perfectly.
