[96771.893971] [ T207727] PM: hibernation: Image allocation is 63957 pages short

Is showing the underlying problem?

Post the output of /usr/sbin/swapon --show and free -h to check if the current swap configuration is inadequate.

Ok,

HP-A10-Notebook:~ # swapon --show
NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
/dev/dm-2 partition 16G 3.9G -1
HP-A10-Notebook:~ # free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 5.4Gi 4.5Gi 189Mi 109Mi 1.0Gi 907Mi
Swap: 15Gi 3.9Gi 12Gi
HP-A10-Notebook:~ #

That checks out ok.

Now show cat /sys/power/image_size
as that determines the kernel’s current maximum/target size for the hibernation image.

Ok,

HP-A10-Notebook:~ # cat /sys/power/image_size
2261245952
HP-A10-Notebook:~ #

That also checks out ok.

Next examine
grep -E 'MemTotal|MemFree|MemAvailable|Unevictable|Mlocked|CmaTotal|CmaFree|SUnreclaim' /proc/meminfo
to help understand why the kernel cannot allocate enough RAM for the hibernation image. (I don’t use hibernation since a long time ago, and haven’t ever encountered this issue.)

Alright,

HP-A10-Notebook:~ # grep -E 'MemTotal|MemFree|MemAvailable|Unevictable|Mlocked|CmaTotal|CmaFree|SUnreclaim' /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 5645188 kB
MemFree: 172000 kB
MemAvailable: 882944 kB
Unevictable: 145748 kB
Mlocked: 764 kB
SUnreclaim: 302788 kB
CmaTotal: 0 kB
CmaFree: 0 kB
HP-A10-Notebook:~ #

Thanks for checking this out.

Ok, this is more telling. Not much free memory to build the hibernation snapshot.

The laptop has plenty of swap space , but hibernation first needs to prepare the memory image in RAM.

There is only about 168 MiB of completely free RAM , and some of the remaining memory cannot readily be reclaimed. The kernel tried to prepare the hibernation image but couldn’t allocate enough RAM, so it stopped.

For hibernation to work, the kernel must be able to secure enough physical RAM to stage and compress the snapshot image before writing it to swap.

MemFree: 172000 kB (~168 MiB) This is all the actual free RAM the kernel has to immediately work with.
MemAvailable: 882944 kB (~862 MiB) This is an estimate of what the system thinks is available.

During the hibernation if failed with ~250 MiB (63,957 pages) short of the target image size ie it lacked the extra RAM workspace needed to build the snapshot.

The kernel docs discuss hibernation image sizing…
https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/pm/sleep-states.html

image_size
This file controls the size of hibernation images.
It can be written a string representing a non-negative integer that will be used as a best-effort upper limit of the image size, in bytes. The hibernation core will do its best to ensure that the image size will not exceed that number, but if that turns out to be impossible to achieve, a hibernation image will still be created and its size will be as small as possible. In particular, writing ‘0’ to this file causes the size of hibernation images to be minimum.
Reading from it returns the current image size limit, which is set to around 2/5 of the available RAM size by default.

I’m going to look into the links you provide more deeply. I was able to hibernate the machine after closing Thunderbird and Firefox, well pretty much everything was closed. I was quite surprised by this success actually. I will report back on this. Thank you for this help. :grinning:

Yes, closing unneeded open applications before hibernation (where possible) is sensible. That will help free enough memory for the kernel to create hibernation snapshot successfully.

I don’t do anything too heavy on my laptops, and never encountered this situation before. So learned something too.

Good catch, Dean. I was looking at those numbers last night. I found that the Unevictable seems the actual issue, since that cannot be reclaimed and is ~168 MB. But I stopped to get some sleepses.

This pinpointed documentation you suggest seems to be very helpful.
I have created a file:

HP-A10-Notebook:/etc/tmpfiles.d> ls -lah
total 4.0K
drwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 54 Sep 25 07:38 .
drwxr-xr-x. 1 root root 3.9K Sep 25 08:06 ..
-rw-r--r--. 1 root root 106 Sep 25 07:38 hibernation_image_size.conf

Containing.

HP-A10-Notebook:/etc/tmpfiles.d> cat hibernation_image_size.conf
# Path Mode UID GID Age Argument
w! /sys/power/image_size - - - - 0

HP-A10-Notebook:/etc/tmpfiles.d>

Notice above the ! after the w
As per documentation here :< https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Systemd#systemd-tmpfiles_-_temporary_files

An exclamation mark ! signifies that the line is only applied at boot. This will prevent re-enabling the wakeup trigger if systemd-tmpfiles is run again after boot (for example by the pacman hook).

Looking back at this now perhaps I should have left out the ! exclamation mark, what are your thoughts?

I have tested once so far and now hibernation is able engage without closing Thunderbird or the Firefox instance, Dolphin and a Konsole.

Edit: Leaving Thunderbird open failed on second attempt, I will test more. I fear this is about all I can do right now with only 6 GiB onboard RAM?

Depending on how many tabs you have open in Firefox it might well eat up all of your RAM (currently here system monitor says FF and associate processes are using some 3.3 GB).

Leave it in place as intended.

Yes, with 6 GiB of RAM there is not a huge amount of headroom for your typical usage I guess. You could also check /proc/meminfo (command as given before) immediately before a successful and a failed hibernation attempt to get an idea about this.

Suspending might be the more pragmatic option for you, particularly with 6 GiB RAM, subject to how long you typically leave the laptop suspended and its battery life.

Ok, more good information you all provide since I last checked in. I will also mention I enabled zswap a couple days prior to starting this post. After a wakeup from hibernation passing cat /proc/meminfoshows Zswap: 437840 kBshould zswap be disabled?

Thanks

Hmmm…I wouldn’t disable zswap yet. The ~428 MiB of Zswap means compressed swapped pages are being held in RAM but not necessily a problem. Ultimately it’s compressing data held in RAM.

If you want to disable it as a test, that could be worthwhile to see whether it makes any difference to the hibernation behaviour.

Hi, turning off zswap, powercycling and then envoking hibernate was a success on the machine with Firefox (16 tabs), Thunderbird left open. Below displays the meminfo output after wakeup.

I do believe that engaging zswap did help machines performance a bit.

I would like to add that I now see section4.7 Disable zswap writeback to use the swap space only for hibernation. I do not know how to provide a proper link for section 4.7 in this post. It is located the link you provided :< https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Power_management/Suspend_and_hibernate#About_swap_partition/file_size

I believe it may be possible to have zswap enabled and use thezswap-disable-writeback described in section 4.7. I certainly have not heard of this before. I had marked this topic as solved but your thoughts are quite welcome on this.

Edit: Does openSUSE have a zswap-disable-package like arch?

Perhaps a new post may be best.
