Thanks for the instructions. Be more forceful w/nebies. Make them start new thread! Or replace that old cpu w/new dual core 686.
<Start again>
OLDCPU,
Install the lastest ALSA. Re-booted several times.
Played with setting in alsamixer, Kmix and YAST/hardware/ sound…
Running SUSE from usb port on WD 750G HD.
WinXP on native 60G HD sound works.
Thank you for your time and efforts.
Jim

OK, I remember that thread. I was having a rough day: no sound on new Suse 11.1 ? - openSUSE Forums
Yours was the Codec: IDT 92HD75B2X5.
I think you are now into bug writing territory:

The model=ref came from a Ubuntu thread, and as of late I am beginning to suspect that Ubuntu dev’s do not forward their fixes upstream, unlike openSUSE, Red Hat and other distributions. What that in essence means is distributions like openSUSE and Red Hat go the extra distance to share their Linux fixes, but Ubuntu do not.
Hopefully one of the openSUSE dev’s (or alsa devs) will pick up on a bug report and run with it (to fix the driver for your pcs hardware).

best,

After looking at the alsa webpage, I found that the IDT 92HD75xxxx is not yet supported in alsa, can anyone verify this??
best,
Javier

I believe the support is limited. Some Ubuntu users managed to get it to work with the latest Ubuntu, and some did not. Unfortunately Ubuntu is known for often not passing their fixes upstream, so there is a possibility any Ubuntu fix will not be passed upstream and hence to other distributions.
The best thing to do is to write a bug report on openSUSE and on alsa for this hardware, as I noted in a previous post. I find the openSUSE/alsa dev quite good in solving any incompatibility problems in sound.
Found a solution to the audio problem:
see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=467381
Install alsa drivers from OBS repo.

Congratulations on tracking this to find a solution.
Thank you for sharing your solution. I assume you mean the alsa drivers on these two pages:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_11.1/
and
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio:/KMP/openSUSE_11.1/
