HP 4540s heating problem, brightness issue (and something else)

Hello folks. I really like openSUSE overall but I have some issue I could use your assistance to solve.

  1. I have a very odd heating issue. I dual boot with Windows and I don’t have this problem there. The laptop just heats really badly even when nothing is done.
I use Gnome 3. I have updated my BIOS to the latest to be sure It’s not it and the problem remains. Here is the output of sensors command
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +47.0°C (crit = +128.0°C)
temp2: +0.0°C (crit = +128.0°C)
temp3: +40.0°C (crit = +128.0°C)
temp4: +47.0°C (crit = +128.0°C)
temp5: +26.0°C (crit = +128.0°C)
temp6: +127.0°C (crit = +128.0°C)
temp7: +0.0°C (crit = +128.0°C)
temp8: +0.0°C (crit = +128.0°C)

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Physical id 0: +47.0°C (high = +72.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)
Core 0: +48.0°C (high = +72.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)
Core 1: +44.0°C (high = +72.0°C, crit = +90.0°C)

What is that temp6? It’s scaring

  1. Another problem is I can’t change the brightness of the screen. I tried different settings to make this work and none did so I am open for suggestions.

  2. When I open certain applications, YaST for example, I am asked for the root password. Any way to cancel that? This is irrelevant to hardware indeed but I didn’t think this deserved a new thread.

Oh, one last irrelevant thing. What is the purpose of hp-toolbox? I have a hp laptop yet it tells me I have no hp devices.
Feel free to answer any of these I will do as you recommend
Thanks

At least you revealed you are using Gnome (many people do not even tell that), but the version of openSUSE you use is still a secret.

My bad. Using 12.3. I installed it yesterday so I haven’t touched the configuration (rather than the boot loader).
I actually want to upgrade to Tumbleweed but I want to get a taste of stock for while

Hello, can anyone help me solve these issues? I would really appreciate that, I want to discover more of openSUSE but these problem are blocking me :X
Thanks

And indeed, you should start a thread for every different question/problem. I assume that one of the reasons that nobody until now answered here, is that they do not know how to answer one of your questions without others maybe thinking that it is about another one.

In any case, this will be a mess within a few days that nobody will understand any more.

When you want to start a thread, then please choose the (sub)forum for it with care. When you post in the wrong forum, the people that may be able to help you will not see it.

Then the title is important to draw people with knowledge about your subject to your thread.

This can only be done when you put only one question in a thread.

This one will be CLOSED to avoid a mess of answers.
