Howto start kde from commandline, after faulty loggin

Hi,
I was playin’ with Suse 11.0, and accidently forgot autologin, and logged into metacity (which isn’t installed):eek:.Result black screen… I normally use KDE but am stuck in this black screen now. How can I disable autologin or go to KDE login? Is there a command after ctrl-Alt-F2?

I’m sorry, I’m not so clear about my problem. I’ mean if there is someway in the text konsole (after Ctrl Alt F1!) to switch to another working desktop?

If kdm/gdm and Xorg is not running, you can usually start it by running:

kdm

If kdm is already running, then Ctrl-Alt-F7 will get back to that screen.

I do not understand what you want.

Do <ctr><alt><f2>, or <ctr><alt><f3>, … etc … do what you want?

Alternatively, look at the program “screen” :

Thanks for responding, and yes with ctrl-alt-F1 I get into the nongraphical mode. But my knowledge of working with the commandline is limited. My basic question is how to get into kde again, in the knowledge that autologin will take me back to the previous not working desktop again and again (metacity). So I was thinking about disableling autologin or switching to another desktop while being in this nongraphical mode.

whilst in command-line mode, login as normal, su to root & once as root,type yast & press enter.use the tab,arrow & space-bar keys to navigate to security & users & disable autologin from there

If you use kdm simply edit /var/adm/kdm/kdmrc.sysconfig
Search for autologin in that file.

Hi Andy,
Very grateful for this advice. My system is working again and I learned a lot. Yast in this nongraphical mode is very simple, useful and will probably safe me with future experiments!
