In the YaST Printer setup select network printer, select the printer model, protocol is AppSocket/JetDirect, then fill in the IP address. Easy!

All our jetdirect printers are setup with “ipp://192.168.0.49” using cups
web page (http://localhots:631)

I have not tested opensuse 11.2 (it’s a beta release) yet but anyway, your
second image shows a connection problem on that port.

What are the capabilities of your jetdirect card? Is port 9100 enabled?

On our printer web page setup (you can enter by
typing “http://192.168.0.231” in your browser), I can see the following
services enabled:

[x] Config SLP
[x] Config Telnet
[x] mDNS
[x] Printing via 9100 port
[x] Printing via FTP
[x] Printing via LPD
[x] printing via IPP

Do you have the corresponding ports enabled?

Greetings,

sounds like a firewall (or even routing?) problem…

O.k… If you can’t connect to the printer setup page could be for some
reasons:

  • Jetdirect network adapter has not enabled that capability, maybe because
of it’s an old printer and has no embedded web server.

You can test from another computer in the network and check if connecting
from other client is working.

If you get into the printer’s configuration web page, then jetdirect
capabilities are not the problem

  • Another possibility could be some firewall setting that impedes your
computer to reach the printer. Just try to stop firewall service
    (rcSuSEfirewall2 stop) and try again.

OTHO, besides ipp:// protocol, you can also try with “ldp://192.168.0.231”
or “socket://192.168.0.231”.

You can see all available options under
http://localhost:631/help/network.html

Great!

Yes, if you just stopped the service, it will be enabled after reboot.

Anyway, you can start it again by running: “rcSuSEfirewall2 start”

I assume you actually meant LPD.

So it seems that your JetDirect printer isn’t set to use JetDirect (port 9100) but uses LPD instead.
