How to view syslog?

Hi,
I have OpenSuse 11 64bit. When I connect my USB hard drive I get an error message telling me to view the syslog.
How can I see the syslog message?

Thanks

With the command dmesg

I know this is an old post, but Google brought me here, so I guess it won´t hurt to clarify.
I don´t think syslog is the same thing as dmesg.

In OpenSuSe, I found that /etc/messages replaces syslog.
If you need to grab the logs in realtime, try to execute

tail -f /var/log/messages

Hope this helps someone.

Yes and no. It is two views of the same thing.

There is no such file “/etc/messages”.
