On OpenSUSE 11, how do I view and change the environment variables when I’m logged in as a certain user?

To see environment variables typically use:
env
To modify them either add them to your own user profile (often done in
/home/<user>/.bashrc or /home/<user>/.profile) or modify them
system-wide in /etc/profile or some other file like that.
