I just installed kde4-kaffeine, kde4-amarok today through repository KDE4:Factory:Extra-Apps. The GUI looks fancy however I can not use them to play video and mp3 files(all these files worked with kde3 kaffeine & amarok). So I am wonderring if anyone has any experience on how to make them work? Or they are not ready for playing? Here is the version of these two apps:
kde4-amarok:

kde4-kaffeine:
Name : kde4-kaffeine Relocations: (not relocatable)
Version : 4.1.0.svn851044 Vendor: openSUSE Build Service
Release : 2.15 Build Date: Mon Sep 1 20:13:37 2008

if i was you i wouldn’t use kde4’s kaffeine i just tryed won’t play video’s just blue screen can’t configure it to use any codecs and doesn’t let go of sound when closed and it now starts up everytime i log into 4.1.1 so im gonna remove it cause there just not ready yet
You need to run “ps aux | grep kaffeine” to check for the silent process before you logout or restart. I found this also happened with some other app which is kinda annoying.
I just made my kde4-amarok play my mp3 files. phonon-xine backend is needed for audio playing. However the video playback still doesnot work. what a pity! Anyway I want to try new stuff and it worthes waiting.
BTW, all the kde4 multimedia will use the same phonon API from now on. So if you want to use kde4 multimedia apps, install phonon backend or wait the specific phonon backend coming out.
Kaffeine plays videos for me, but none of the buttons seems to work and I can’t move the progress bar.
Have you tried Dragon Player for KDE4? It works very well for me. It has all the essential features, subtitle support, multiple audio stream support, etc. It lacks some of the more advanced features but it gets the job done quite well. It currently can do far more than the KDE4 version of Kaffeine can do, and most of the things the KDE3 version can do.
Also, Phonon-xine is sort of a xine frontend, make sure you have the necessary libxine1 packages from packman installed.
