How to upgrade to gnome 3 in 11.4?

How do i upgrade to native gnome 3 (not the shell)?

Maybe you must wait for that Cannot login after upgrading to Gnome 3

Gnome 3 failed to load

ok but if I wanted to test this out for my self what would be the steps? I am kind of new to open suse - come form ubuntu

Open your terminal and write these

su
# zypper addrepo -f http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/GNOME:/STABLE:/3.0/openSUSE_11.4/
# zypper dup

awesome thanks. Is there a place here on the site where I can read about various commands? I am use to sudo -i and sudo apt-get install and what not.

I do not know in English sub forum. But in Greek subforum I have written guides about openSUSE funcrions.

Don’t do it. That repo is not ready yet. You will have a tough time in getting you system back to normal.

I agree with you. Try to upgrade in two months.

You can simply disable the Gnome 3 repository and “zypper dup” again and it will restore your system to the way it was before. I already went through it. I hope they will correct the repository for Gnome 3 soon. Then your Gnome 2.32 will be back to normal.

Instead of throwing ideas that do not honor the commitment of the openSUSE GNOME Team on the GNOME3 Project repository on openSUSE Build Service, it would probably be a better solution to point users to this thread[1].

People are working on it, it will happen ‘soon’, my guess is that it will happen next week, nevetherless, I’m sure it won’t take 2 months.

Look it would better all users to upgrade in two or more months than have problems now with repository. That’s my opinion.

And whats the difference between ‘post-release’ and ‘two months’ ?

What do you mean?

I found this review very interesting/disturbing: Gnome 3 - This is the end, it seems

I doubt that anything will be the end for Gnome 3, it has a lot of
potential.
KDEf4 needed two years before it reached a usable state.

Hi
I find Gnome 3.0 excellent sofar, sure there are some differences in the
UI and concept, but it works… and well IMHO, my 4 year old can start
firefox and get to his PBS kids…so he is a happy camper

i can see no reason to become disturbed by the opinion of one person
(even if disguised as “a web site”)…

especially since we know controversy attracts onlookers–and the site
wants eyeballs to drop in, and leave some revenue…

when when have a billion blogs regurgitating, echoing and refuting each
other’s opinions, what will we do then?

i think: yawn.

Q: Why do you upgrade?
A: Because the Gecko is always greener on the other side!

I have been testing Unity on my Ubuntu Netbook since the beginning. I am now only running Gnome 3 on it and much happier. I agree Gnome 3 is great and will be even better as developers build plugins for it. I am anxiously awaiting the ability to install Gnome 3 on my openSUSE laptop. As soon as it is ready I will be running it on openSUSE! (And will probably install openSUSE on my netbook as well). Since Ubuntu has taken their stand that Unity is the future, I don’t see them applying much attention to Gnome. So it will be time to completely say goodbye.

After the glowing review of openSUSE 11.4 KDE, you doubt his review of Gnome 3?
