How to upgrade kernel to 4.18?

I just installed Leap 15 and see that it’s running kernel 4.12.14. I need to run either 4.18 or 4.19 to support Ryzen Threadripper 2 correctly.

I referenced https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/reference/html/book.opensuse.reference/cha.tuning.multikernel.html and edited made sure I had “multiversion.kernels = latest,latest-1,running” in the conf file. When I go and look at the kernel versions in yast only 4.12 is listed. I’m also have a Nvida GTX 1080 in the machine and not sure if something will break.

You can add the kernel repo

http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/

That should have a 4.19 kernel.

There may be new kernel builds every day. So, after installing a newer kernel, you might want to disable that repo. And then re-enable when you next want to update your kernel.

I feel dumb. Added the repo as you suggested and have 4.19 installed and running. Thank you for your help. Just need to figure out the Nvida driver now, back to google :slight_smile:

There may be a repo for that, too. Check the factory mailing list

Since you are using the latest kernel, the nvidia driver for your kernel will probably need to be the same as the Tumbleweed nvidia driver. Or maybe you should take the kernel (but nothing else) from the Tumbleweed repo, to make sure that it is compatible with the nvidia repo for Tumbleweed.

I followed the steps from SDB:NVIDIA the hard way - openSUSE Wiki and was successful with installing driver version 4.15.25.

Great. You might need to redo that whenever you update the kernel.
