How to tap into Windows Network for Printers

Hello,

I currently have a desktop set up at home, and from the windows side, I have been successful in terms of file sharing, and printers and etc quite well.

Now, I wish to have access the printers shared from Windows network from OpenSUSE 13.2 laptop while I am around at home. I dug up some documents online such as
https://tweakhound.com/2013/03/19/how-to-network-opensuse-12-3-and-windows/
http://www.tweakhound.com/linux/suse/112/samba.html

except both document seem to be on using Linux as the host. In my case, Windows is a host, OpenSUSE is a mirror, + OpenSUSE laptop.

The idea is that I wish to SSH into the mirror, and send print orders to Windows Desktop, from my OpenSUSE laptop from anywhere.

The exact question for this specific thread is this:
-How can I access printers shared in local “home group” network from OpenSUSE 13.2?

Setting up an openSUSE machine to serve printers to Windows clients is documented here: <https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/reference/html/book.opensuse.reference/cha.samba.html>.
Setting up an openSUSE client to use printers on a Windows server, is described here: <https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/reference/html/book.opensuse.reference/cha.samba.html#sec.samba.client.inst>.
Further information is available from the Samba folks: <https://www.samba.org/>; <https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/>; <https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-Guide/>; <https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/toc.html>.

Okay,

I am 100% inexperienced in server management.

What I can tell you is that I have set up “home network” from the windows side in my home wifi network. I just wish to access it from my OpenSUSE laptops. Thank you for the references, but that is at least right now beyond me.

Please slow down – the openSUSE documentation is meant to be useful for EVERYONE. Please help us by explaining where the openSUSE documentation is unclear for newcomers.

That the Samba documentation is possibly targeted more in the direction of professional System Administrators is a given fact. :embarrassed:

From your openSUSE client(s), what is reported by ‘/usr/bin/smbclient -L <host>’?

Did you get as far as configuring the SMB printer(s) in CUPS first?
