Upgraded from v11 to 11.3
Now when I’m using my voip application and open a youtube video the sound from both applications mixes. It seems also that I have less kmix controls.
I need help to disable this annoying behavior somehow.
You wish to stop this ? Wow. I have threads ongoing where users are trying hard to get this capability !
You can likely stop this by changing the audio output mode of your desktop. To be more precise I need to know what desktop (I assume KDE because you mentioned kmix), I need to know what back end you have selected in your desktop (kmenu > configure desktop > multimedia) . wrt the backend you have selected (gstreamer or xine) have you installed the packman packaged version? If you have installed the packman packaged version of xine, using the packman packaged xine-ui what audio output mode is selected in xine ?
Also, do you have pulse audio enabled? That purportedly also provides this capability.
wrt kmix controls, did you go to the kmix menu item and see if the controls you want/are-missing could be added ?
- I have KDE
- The backend says it’s xine ( photon xine backend )
xine is not installed on my system:
~> rpm -qa xine
libxine1-gnome-vfs-1.1.18.1-1.37.i586
libxine1-1.1.18.1-1.37.i586
phonon-backend-xine-4.4.2-1.6.i586
kdebase4-runtime-xine-4.4.4-3.1.2.i586
xinetd-2.3.14-149.1.i586
libxine1-pulse-1.1.18.1-1.37.i586 - How to enable or disable pulse ?
- What kmix menu, where is it ?
If you install the application xine-ui (xine user interface) you will be able to tune the xine backend. You can then choose an audio output mode that will refuse to let two applications share the same audio device.
In your lower right corner is likely a small ‘speaker’ icon. That is ‘kmix’. If you left click on it and select ‘mixer’ you should have the User interface for ‘kmix’ pop up. Then select “settings > configure channels” and drag from left to right to setup the mixer.
Reference enable/disable of pulse, I recommend no changes there. BUT since you asked, if one wishes to ‘disable’ pulse, then at the terminal prompt enter this command (with root permissions).
setup-pulseaudio --disable
restart and test.
To enable it again with (with root permissions):
setup-pulseaudio --enable
… and again, I’m showing ‘how’ it is done but I am NOT recommending it.

Ah, this is what you call the kmix menu ! I don’t see the menu bar, I’m sure it was there before but somehow I have disabled it
and don’t know how to reenable it gain ;-(
And I have no “setup-pulseaudio” on my system ( opensuse 11.3 default desktop )
I have no xine but I have vlc and I can choose it for the backend

[/quote]Simply open a terminal and as a regular user (NOT as root) type:
kmix
To install the xine-ui type:
su -c 'zypper in xine-ui'
and enter root password when prompted. Your pc needs to be connected to the internet for xine-ui to install from the web.
Running “kmix” from the console does not bring a config menu where I can choose “settings”
Also:
~> xine
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.5.
(c) 2000-2007 The xine Team.
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 132 (XVideo)
Minor opcode of failed request: 17 ()

Current serial number in output stream: 2347
You’re still using the distro’s packages, you first need to switch to those from the Packman repo.
What does running ‘kmix’ from konsole give then? Did you suddenly have a small speaker icon appear in the lower right hand corner. If so, left click on it like I described above and select ‘mixer’.
I have the icon to start with and choosing “mixer” gives me the menu popup with four slides: “master”, “center”, “LFE”, “PCM” and “digital”,
but I do not have the menu bar to choose settings
I am thinking you can not remember my post from above. I’ll repost it:
Now if kmix does not have a “settings” menu item like I described above, perhaps you could do a screen dump, and post the image on ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting so we can see what you are referring to.
Here is how it looks like:

I’m 90% positive there was a menu bar just above the “HDA NVidia” tab but somehow I’ve disabled it
The “HDA NVidia” is not what I am used to seeing the in the mixer menu. “HDA Intel” is more common. … Have you restarted recently ? If not did the bar come back after restarting?
What is the order of audio devices you have under KMENU > Configure Desktop > Multimedia … (say the Audio output setting) ?
What is the order of audio devices you have under YaST > Hardware > Sound ?
1.) Restarted three times since I started this thread - no bar
2.) HDA NVidia (STAC92xx analog)
3.) MCP51 High Definition Audio
Also upon login a popup informs me an input device and one output device both named as in 2.) have been removed
and asks if I wanted kde to forget about them or to manage. I just click “cancel” so it will come up again next time I restart.
Do you have problem with sound in Firefox with flash player ?
Typically I find the best way to get sound working is to ensure the order of sound devices in KMENU > Configure Desktop > Multimedia is re-arranged in priority to match the order of devices in YaST > Harware > Sound.
Reference the popup, if it were me I would select ‘remove’ (ie forget).
My sound works perfectly, what I need is a way to not allow applications play sound at the same time, like I’m watching “South Park” online and
suddenly some annoying ad from the page starts playing in the background and the sound of it inteferes with the sound from the show, very bad…

Ah, maybe the real issue? I’d also been dealing with this same thing (I’m watching a video and all of a sudden some dang ad on a webpage starts).
Not a complete fix to your original post (if there is a solution I’m interested, too), I block every mis-behaving app by using Firefox and one of the three or so ad-blockers (I use Ad-blocker). It works by analyzing every web page you surf and “tabs” any content which can be blocked with a click. Natch, things can be unblocked easily, too if you change your mind.
HTH,
