how to stay logged into forums indefinately?

I am always asked to login to openSUSE forums. I’d like the forums to remember me. how can I do this? If not, can this be implemented?

Thread moved to Forums Support/Information

I’m afraid the answer to both questions is no. The openSUSE community’s single sign on uses iChain, and the session timeout is set by Novell IT. We have no control over either.

The closest you can get under the present set up is to have Firefox remember your password, not the same, not what you were after but that as good as it gets for now.

Same for Konqueror.

Als as long as I leave a window open (can be minimized) new windows are login in on start. But that only for about an hour or so. After that I often have to remove the cookies from opensuse.org to get the login working again.

i remain amazed that the timeout here is so short…my online broker,
for example lets me stay online and inactive for up eight hours…

well, i am allowed to edit that though my profile, and can pick for
myself a timeout of 55 minutes, two hours, four hours or 8 hours…

it would be nice if we had that capability here, huh?
maybe if enough of us ASK NICELY for a longer default time-out, we could
get it…

how about someone start a poll to see what the community would like for
a default timeout??

The timeout is there not just for the forums, but for all logins to the
Novell website (same system front-ends it). The timeout is set the way
it is for security purposes - since when logged in, you have access to
all the product you’re entitled to as well as license information, etc.

Because of the sensitive nature of some of the information that is
accessible, the timeout makes sense as it is, and I don’t think there’s a
good chance of having it increased. I understand your point about your
online broker having a longer timeout - assuming you mean investment
broker, yeah, that’s financial information. But I think people will tend
to log out and close their browser more consistently when their personal
financial information is on the line. Less so when they think the login
they’re using is only for access to a community website (without thinking
about the other things you can access that can do potential harm).

That said, it never hurts to ask.

I’m seeing what can be done. The problem is that the opensuse/Novell login
system is tied to all Novell/openSUSE pages of which these forums are part,
and the 60 minute limit keeps the connections at a level that keeps the
performance of the servers reasonable and makes it so someone like yourself
doesn’t have slow connection problems.

I’m talking to Novell’s IT dept. about it to see if anything can be done,
but forums are just one pixel in a bigger picture so for right now, 60
minutes it is. I’ll let you know if that changes.

thanks for the insight…

just thinking out loud…if it is being worked, that is good enough for
me–no need to respond…

but, i do wonder ‘why’ it was necessary to lump the log-ins here along
with those at ALL Novell pages? (i’m thinking now about Jim’s post that
the folks with a Novell license need to protect their stuff, over
there…but, we have nothing here needing that level of security…

maybe it “makes sense” to open this place up a little…

and, maybe not

i mean, i’ve not counted the number of folks who have complained about
the forced “too quick” log offs…where as google lets me log in once
each two weeks (i guess they use a cookie)…which [imho] ought to be
good enough for the forum…

(hmmmmmm…just as a matter of interest, i wonder how many with license
access (the ones Jim referred to) come over here anyway? seems if they
did their cookie jar could have a pass to come on in here… sure, the
userID creation routines on both sides would have to talk to each other
to make sure there were no dups created…)

Because from an end user standpoint, one login is much easier for users
to deal with than a login for each system. One of Novell’s main lines of
business is identity and access management. One of the aims of those
products is to provide a user with a login name and password and with
unified access controls to simplify systems administration.

If we don’t, we get complaints it’s not integrated with the openSUSE login
on wiki etc. so there is a downside with each option.

That’s less important here than doing what the community wants. So far I’ve
received a lot of positive comments about the integrated login. At
inception of these forums, everyone involved thought an integrated login
would be a great benefit.

Preferenced changed now - sorry about any confusion.

Yep.

Sure, but I do see that IS&T would prefer to keep things simple from that
user admin standpoint. But I also see that user confusion over which
login to use where could ensue. I use sites where I have to have
multiple logins (on one site, I have 4 different accounts for different
roles), and I have a hard time keeping straight which login is used for
what purpose.
