How to start kde4 with startx?

Hi,

I am running a OpenSuSE 11.0 and would like to start kde4 via the console via startx.

I have been trying to set

DISPLAYMANAGER to kdm4 in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager

which did not really work.

Does anyone know where to set which value?

Thanks and regards
kc

PS:
The reason I want to start kde4 via the console is that otherwise my i815 chipset will not configure the external display in xinerame mode correctly - but this is another story…

I always understood that to start using startx, you login in console mode (init 3) and then issue the command startx. As long as KDE4 was the last desktop you were using, it will load automatically.

It must be eight years since I last did it that way but I assume it still works.

Yast-/etc/syconfig editor-desktop-windowmanager set to plasma
Plasma is not in the selection so you may just add it.

On the side, I am using xfce so mine is set to xfce4 and when starting x goes right to xfce4.

If it fails look for errors and post it here and someone might know about it and can help you.

On the side, there is another way of starting it from init 3 by running xinit and run plasma from the xterm that will appear whe x starts. Downside if you exit the xterm so plasma too.

Hope this helps.
