How to set up a virtual machine?

A few days ago when I still had 11.1, I installed Virtualbox and installed an iso of Ubunut 9.10. It worked but was kind of slow and wouldn’t go to full screen. The next day, when I tried to find Virtualbox, I couldn’t find it. But I did find Xen. So I installed it. When I tried to mount the Ubuntu 9.10 iso, Xen would have an unnamed error while installing. When I tried to start Virtualbox, Xen would say there was no kernal found.

Will someone give me some easy-for-a-noob-to-follow directions on how to best get Unbuntu 9.10 on a virtual machine in 11.2?

Any help will be appreciated, Thank you.

Honestly - with your spec I would give VM’s a miss.
XP in Virtual Box may go ok.
Virtual Box (Sun Version) Install HowTo - openSUSE Forums

Using Virtual Box - Some Quick Tips - openSUSE Forums

Following your directions at: Virtual Box (Sun Version) Install HowTo - openSUSE Forums, I installed pam-devel (I already had the others from trying to install the nVidia driver). That’s as far as I’ve gotten, by the way. After I restarted, I had to login with username and password. That’s the first time that’s happened. Plus, the bottom panel (tool bar?) is more colorful and detailed. I wonder what other packages there are that I don’t have that will enhance my desktop experience?

Thank you.

“Linux_Downloads - VirtualBox” doesn’t have a selection for 11.2 – is it okay to use 11.1?

I see elsewhere in OpenSUSE Forums there is a Virtualbox repo at: http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...nSUSE_Factory/, but in “Virtual Box (Sun Version) Install HowTo - openSUSE Forums,” you say:
“Make sure you have no Virtual Box packages installed from the openSUSE repositories.” So where should I get it from if the one for 11.1 won’t work? Or should wait?

Thank you for all your help and consideration.

Randall

OK
Forget the Sun one for now
Add this repo
Index of /repositories/Virtualization:/VirtualBox/openSUSE_11.2

In the mean time post result of this

Open Software Management
Filter by repository and select the new VBox repo
Check to install
virtualbox-ose-kmp-default

then add the x11 driver
and guest tools

Good evening,

I’m presently writing this on Ubuntu 9.10 using Virtualbox. To be honest, I got here more or less by luck. First off, how do I get this little screen to maximize, that is fill up the monitor screen like a regular install?

You told me to add this repository: Index of /repositories/Virtualization:/VirtualBox/openSUSE_11.2. Well, I can’t figure out how to do that. The only ones that I’ve been successful in adding are either the community repositories, or ones that have an URL (http . . . ). But I was sort of ashamed to ask how – tired of being dumb so much of the time.

So I went to software management, filtered, and found and installed the following at one of the main repositories: virtualbox-ose-kmp-default

then add the x11 driver
and guest tools

I also installed virtualbox, itself.

When I restarted, I didn’t see Virtualbox, per se, so I selected “virtualization.” Then I selected something like hypervisor (I can’t look because I’m on Virtualbox now, and if I leave, I might not be able to find it again). So when I selected Hypervisor (or whatever), it began the installation of Xen. As before, I couldn’t get Xen to work, so I uninstalled it.

After I uninstalled Xen, then I saw Virtualbox. I set it up to run Ubuntu 9.04 when I couldn’t get it to mount the 9.10 iso. But then I couldn’t get past the login to save my life. So I uninstalled it, too, and decided to just confess to not knowing how to add the repository you recommended.

When I restarted, however, there was a message box on the screen saying something about Virtualbox. Apparently, the message was pertaining to the Virtualbox that I had originally installed on 11.1. It’s still here following the upgrade.

When I was upgrading, it was taking so long that my screen went black and my desktop was unresponsive. Being used to Ubuntu distribution upgrading, I thought the upgrade was complete and rebooted. As it turned out, I’d aborted in the middle of the upgrade and had to reinstall 11.1 from live DVD. I used the same partitions. As it turned out, all my files were intact following the reinstall. I’d had the GNOME desktop; on the reinstall, I got the KDE desktop – it was sharp. I almost kept it, but had committed myself to the upgrade. So then, I did the zypper dup. Following, I still had all my files intact. So I guess that that’s how the 11.1 Virtualbox survived. But just as I couldn’t find it on 11.1, I didn’t see it following the dup. I guess I’m going to have to take the chance of getting off vb and getting on host.

I’m hazy on how authentic an os this Karmic 9.10 is. What all can I do with it? Should I got to Ubuntu Forums, or am I in the right place since host is 11.2?

May I ask what is the reason you said to “Make sure you have no Virtual Box packages installed from the openSUSE repositories. (?)” Do I need to get rid of my current – not, wait. I didn’t get my current Virtualbox from OPenSUSE, I’m pretty sure I got from somewhere else. I’ll check my browser history to see if I can find out where.

As always, all of your help and directions are very much appreciated. You must be blue in the face by now.

Thank you.

Randall:)

Dude you are totally mixed up.
That epic tale is kind of scary too.

Virtual Box is made by Sun Microsystems, you can download it but as you found out there is no 11.2 .rpm at the moment.

You have also found out that Virtual Box is available in your Package Management for SUSE. This is the OSE (open source edition) Version. It lacks USB support and maybe some other things, I’m not sure. But actually I use it and it’s fine.
Now You can add an extra repo to give a slightly more up to date version, the one I suggested earlier that you can’t figure how to add. BUT no matter, the one in the normal repo will work fine.

Now to get the full screen of the guest, you need to install the guest additions in Ubuntu. With Ub* running go here like this:
http://thumbnails24.imagebam.com/5610/0d49fe56098741.gif](http://www.imagebam.com/image/0d49fe56098741)

Then you need to mount the .iso file it downloads (if it doesn’t do it for you)
The in Ub* use a terminal and cd to the mounted media location
and run the installer

sudo sh VirtualBox-Linux-x86…(I’m guessing the package name here) But if you type part of it and hit TAB it will auto complete as far as it can then you add the next little bit and TAB and so on until you have the full package name. It’s just there are several installer packages in the .iso and you need the one for your machine, the Linux and x86

See how you get on

My current VirtualBox (PUEL) is VirtualBox 3.0.10_54097_openSUSE111-l.i586.rpm. I got it from VirtualBox.org. It would only do full screen after I went to software manager and installed everything VirtualBox.
But it’s real slow.

The one Fat Bloke uses on The VirtualBox Live Show has several Windoz options and Ubuntu 9.04 already saved and available for installation. But I don’t see those on mine. Mine has the Windoz options, but they aren’t saved to install; i.e., no images to mount – I have to provide my own, I suppose.

I’m wondering if the OSE version available in software management would work better on 11.2? What do you think? Should I leave the one I have on here and install the OSE and see how it works first before removing PUEL; or do I remove the PUEL first?

To tell you the truth, I’m getting rather weary of messing with it; 11.2 is very nice as is. I do rather like PCLINUXOS; but with it, I’m learning that there’s more to a distro than what I see and use – how it’s maintained and it’s support network are more important. Thank you, openSUSE, for being stable and dependable.

And thank you.

Randall:p

By the way, HOW do I add the repo you recommended?

If you are using the PUEL version no repo’s needed.

post result of:

rpm -qi VirtualBox

IF you actually are using the PUEL version, you don’t want any other VBox packages from the repo’s mixing things up.

linux-cms6:/home/randall # rpm -qi VirtualBox
package VirtualBox is not installed
linux-cms6:/home/randall #

VirtualBox is installed. I just looked and noticed that it says VirtualBox OSE. What happened to PUEL? I’m confused. Do you think I should uninstall OSE to see if PUEL pops back up? Or just leave it alone? Or should I download PUEL again, (if it doesn’t pop back up), and this time get the one for all systems (like someone in another thread mentioned that he did since there’s not yet an 11.2 selection) instead of the one for 11.1?

Leave it as it is.
Now just to get you sorted with the guest additions. Did you figure it out?
Maybe this will help
Using Virtual Box - Some Quick Tips - openSUSE Forums

Okay; Ubuntu 9.10 does run on VB-OSE, but now, it’s incredibly slow. It was working much faster the other day. No doubt I screwed it up tinkering around with it. But it is there and it does work, so I can’t complain.

Thank you very much.
