Both my CPU 0 and CPU 1 are always on 1.2 Ghz. The Cpu-freq info shows that the possible frequency steps are: 2.10 Ghz 1.60 Ghz and 1.20 Ghz
Conservative and Powersave profiles both run at this boundary. Using userspace profile it will not go less than 1.2 Ghz no matter what smaller value I assign.
Moreover, I tried to change this value : /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq
with this comm: echo 800000 > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_min_freq , but it stays at 1.2 Ghz.
I do not need the CPUs to run at these speeds. Is this the minimum possible and any tweak will only damage the system?
In a previous OS, CPU went lower than 1.2 Ghz, and Laptop was calmer/cooler. Also, no boot time parameters helped change this. I also did not notice any difference whatsoever in cpu frequency, hard disk temp, and battery life by adding: pcie_aspm=force, so I do not know if this is a real fix for the issue.
Thanks a lot. Running: Sony VAIO Laptop Intel Core2Duo T6500 @ 2.1 Ghz - 4GB RAM - Radeon HD Radeon Driver - OpenSUSE 12.1 64-bit GNOME Desktop (With No changes made to system)

Sounds like your governor is set on performance - start yast2 power-
management and try setting it to ‘balanced’ or ‘conservative’ and see if
that helps.

And looking at the OP’s message again, I see that he’s already got that
covered.
May be that that’s the lowest speed that CPU goes (or that system). I
used to think I wanted a Sony Vaio, until I saw how many problems people
had with getting them to run Linux.

The only frequencies that can be achieved are the ones in
If 1.2 GHz is the lowest there, then you will not get any lower speed. The
problem could be in the BIOS or in the kernel. If a previous version of Linux
could get a slower speed, then report this to linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org as a
regression. If it was a different OS, then check to see if you have the latest
BIOS version installed. If so, complain to Sony.
Hello First, the OP is me guys! That post was mainly about the GPU burning my laptop.
Now, it is kind of okay, but its still kind of hot…unnecessarily hot…as I said, CPU Freq is >= 1.2 Ghz only. This does not have to be since I am 80% of the time just reading some PDF file or using LibreOffice.
Yes I meant Windows 7 as the other OS, the only time under Windows when things stepped up and began to boil is after I used the laptop for a long time and had many PDF files, internet tabs and videos and document transfer and downloads and office running altogether.
Yast2power does not take effect actually. And no, the governor is not set to Performance, I set it always to powersave, but the frequency of powersave and conservative are always the same = 1.2 Ghz, but conservative can step it up a little.
My BIOS is new, i think…
linux-x3qj:/home/ahmaddaoud # dd if=/dev/mem bs=32768 skip=31 count=1 | strings -n 10 | grep -i bios
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
32768 bytes (33 kB) copied, 0.000113771 s, 288 MB/s
AMIBIOS 080010
AMIBIOS(C)2005 American Megatrends, Inc.
BIOS Date: 05/09/08 11:12:06 Ver: 08.00.10
I have not tried any older Kernel other than what SUSE 12.1 uses.
Well, I will try to look for something posted by SONY maybe? OR some tool out there…and will report back here!
Would appreciate your follow up suggestions too.

that is the only place you can get answers, because the reason that it
run cooler, quieter and the battery last longer with Windows is exactly
because the Sony and Windows engineers work together to test until
they find the optimum way to control CPU freq and heat to max battery
life…and, they do NO such thing with open software engineers…for
working together both win: Sony by offering the best value to the
customer and MS by shutting out a hardware where Linux can fairly compete…
if you want a laptop which runs linux well you will not buy another
VAIO, read around and see…
the hardware in my sig is so close to zero noise i usually can not hear
it at all, and when i can it is whisper quiet…as i type this it
cruises at 1000MHz and 51 degrees C., you will never get that with
your machine…
but, you can keep trying…
opps, it just popped up to 1.67GHz for a second, and back down. but
still stuck on 51C
