How to set display mode for "standard" consoles (tty1-6) in 12.3?

I just upgraded a server from 12.2 to 12.3, which target is runlevel 3 (or it’s systemd equivalent target), so text mode.

The display mode I get is a bit too much for the attached (old) monitor. So the screen is barely readable: (very) small font and “shaking” letters…

I tried setting the “vga mode” in the bootloader section in Yast, but this doesn’t seem to be used for the tty’s…?

Try to add nomodeset as additional kernel parameter.

Thanks! This got me a nice readable 128x48 terminal!

Btw: I also removed ‘splash=silent’ and ‘quiet’ from the kernel parameters line, so I can see what’s happening during the boot process. I already removed plymouth and splashy (and their dependencies) earlier…

you can save all that extra removal work by just installing the text
mode version…

dd

When I originally installed it (with 12.1) and it was still on my desk, it was nice to have a graphical desktop to do some of the installation work… Now that it’s in the rack I don’t need the graphics anymore…
