How to recover failed update?

Hi all,

I ran 11.1 security update today, now the system will not recognize most of my hardware, will not enter X, how can I recover or revert back? I have hardwired and cannot get the network card to work, errors at boot indicate a problem with modules…this all occurred after rebooting from today’s update??

Did it install a new kernel? If so you may need to reinstall your video driver.

I believe the issue is greater than a single driver, looking at the log I see module errors for iptables too. I do not see a backup kernel (and did not look at what the prior kernel version was before update). Basically a rock solid system, ran today’s security update – then boom – no network, no X…it appears the update did not complete or ? Can I revert back, what are my options? Thanks for your help!

Ok I thought we would take it a step at a time and see if we could get X running again first. Try setting driver to vesa ie sax2 -m 0=vesa as root

You may want to see if the file system is still good. Boot the install media select repair and run the tests on the file system.

Passing thought about your data before repairing the installation: Mount the Linux home partition using a Live CD or the openSUSE install DVD and copy the /home data to a usb or some other storage location. Then fix the openSUSE, maybe useful in the worst case scenario.

His kernel didn’t properly update for some reason and now he doesn’t have the modules directory, thus the iptables etc. errors.

Should be able to use the repair functionality on the DVD to restore the working kernel and modules.

Thank you all for the feedback…solved.

I found it odd that the previous version of the kernel was not available to fallback, so I went to the src directory and performed a “make clean”, “make”, “make modules_install”, then was able to boot back to the previous state with the previous kernel version. Finally, used Yast to update (or complete the update).

A thought/suggestion, I “assumed” the update had completed after several minutes, so I then shutdown using the graphic KDE icon – should there not be a hook to check to see if an update is still in process and warn the user it has not yet been completed? I suspect a premature shutdown was the cause after observing how long the update had taken the second go around.

Right you are - it should not be possible to close down the updater whilst updates are being done.

In other words, it’s a flaw - if it was the cause.

I have the same problem after the kernel update yesterday. The update might be flawed. :frowning:
I am trying the sollution in this thread.

My networking was fixed in this way, but not my X. That isn’t a big problem, but should I try and install the kernel update again?:
I’m gonna try it.

It worked rotfl!

Could this be because ‘mkinitrd’ did not run (properly, or at the right moment?
