How to recognize 8G memory by OpenSuSe 11.4 64-bit

Dear All,

Yesterday I installed the OpenSuSe 11.4 64-bit on my machine, which is equipped with i5 cpu and 8G memory. However, the system info showed only 3.9G memory was recognized. It is known the 64-bit linux system can accommodate up to 64G memory, so I’m wondering what kind of reason is responsible for my problem? And how to solve this problem? Any suggestion is highly appreciated!

Best regards,
Junjie

You only installed the 32-bit system? Post the output from the following
commands:

uname -a
free

Good luck.

Also, 64-bit Linux can handle a lot more than 64 GB RAM… 512 GiB or 1
PiB is what I can find quickly online and the latter is just the certified

Good luck.

64 GB is just the amount a simple 32bit pae enabled kernel is able to use if
I recall correctly.

PC: oS 11.3 64 bit | Intel Core2 Quad Q8300@2.50GHz | KDE 4.6.5 | GeForce
9600 GT | 4GB Ram
Eee PC 1201n: oS 11.4 64 bit | Intel Atom 330@1.60GHz | KDE 4.6.5 | nVidia
ION | 3GB Ram

The first thing I would do is to boot into the bios and check if the bios
shows the full 8GB, just to be absolutely sure that there is no problem.

I just checked the bios, which only showed 4GB memory. Now this problem is fixed by re-configuration of the bios. Many thanksl!
