How to network two computers (Windows 7 & OpenSUSE 11.3)

Hi there, I’m having a bit of a hard time trying to network these two computers.
The computers reside in my house and are both connected to the router by Ethernet. (Linux with IP 192.168.1.111 and Win 7 with IP 192.168.1.199)

Currently, I have it set up that if I’m on Linux I’m able to see Windows 7 shared files/folders over the network and have access to them once I’ve entered a correct username / password for a user on the Windows Machine.

So if my Linux user name is Matt, and my Windows 7 user name is Alain it goes something like this:

Linux -> Network -> Folder I want to browse -> Enter Alain user / pass -> Access!

I’d like to set this up to not require a username and password at all if possible. Or if otherwise not possible, is it then possible to mount this in my fstab with the username and password already entered?

Secondly, the Windows 7 machine is now able to see my Linux PC (Matt) and the folders I’ve chosen to share (/home/matt) but when selected it is prompted for a username and password as well but no combinations seem to work. So it goes something like:

Windows 7 → Network → Matt → Home → User / Pass …

The Windows 7 prompt for the password says for the domain \ALAIN-PC\alain but his password doesn’t seem to get us anywhere.

My smb.conf didn’t exist when I installed Samba so I copied this one to try and get a basic thing working, but that is evidently not working…
SMB HOWTO: General Configuration (/etc/smb.conf)

Any tips to get this set up? Thanks!

LostChild1;

Have you read these two HowTos:
http://opensuse.swerdna.org/suselanprimer.html
and
http://opensuse.swerdna.org/susesambawin7.html

If alain is a local user and the PC is not part of a Windows or Samba Domain
you do not need the domain specified. Just use alain. If the PC is part of
a domain use the syntax ALAIN-PC\alain. The password will be the password
for alain on the local machine.
