How to Masquerad Internet using knetwork manager

OpenSuse 11.4 Asus Netbook 1000H

Following other members in the forums I have installed Opensuse 11.4 on the Netbook. In the early days Ubuntu Netbook Remix worked well for me. But this has been discarded, and the “one size fits all” Ubuntu had become slow and cumbersome. So… onto my post. Opensuse is working well. The install went beautifully.
It detected the Wireless Internet and I am able to get on line.
I also need to share the Internet connection to a desktop. This is done via a small network switch.
Thus far I cannot do this. I tried to use ifup to configure a static ip but this busted my Wireless configuration. I went back to knetwork manager. Then I tried to set up the wired network using knetwork manager and under IPV4 “share” the connection. But this blanks out any possiblity of a static address and substitutes dhcp. My desktop cannot ping the this dhcp address.
Any ideas on how to proceed ?
Ubuntu had this thing called Firestarter ? - from memory. This configured the system to sharing the network.

You need to get two network interfaces working on the laptop, one wired (for use with the switch) and one wireless (for connecting thenetbook to the internet). So revisit the yast configurator and switch to “ifup method”. That is supposed to turn off the network manager applet. If you can get both interfaces running that way, you will be almost there.

Here’s an old pictorial for “ifup method”: Configure a network card in Suse/openSUSE 11.x for Internet Access & wifi.
The wired interface that connects to the switch would be given a fixed I.P. address.

Then – have a look at the Linux version of Microsoft’s ICS here: openSUSE ICS: Internet Connection Sharing (Linux IP Masquerading) with Suse or Windows Servers

Or if You don’t want to turn off NetworkManager check out my post (#20) in this thread:

I believe this is more or less what You want to do.

Thanks for the info. I am not sure about the network translation part. I could not find any references to this in SuSEfirewall2.

It’s in one of the tabs in YaST firewall management. I can give You a screenshot when I get home.

Don’t know if You’ve found it already but just in case it looks like this in polish

SUSE Paste

This issue is now resolved…he looks to the sky and holds his hands in prayer ; )

Remember I had Asus 1000H Netbook > Router > OpenSuse Desktop. The 1000H is my gateway for the Desktop. The original install configured the Wireless internet and I was able to get on line … all good. But then I needed to set up Masquerading and that required some reconfiguring.
Setting that up busted my Internet connection for a while. I installed the plasmoid-networkmanager in an attempt to get networking going. Not sure if it helped the Network is operational.

Some things I don’t understand. I had a wired network set up with Networkmanager and another - AutoEth0. Using the wired eth0 managed by NetworkManager enabled me to connect to my Desktop. It is a bit confusing - but it is working.

The AutoEth0 is in my opinion knetworkmanager bug. Just delete it if You can and use just the profiles created by yourself

As far as I know it’s impossible to modify the AutoEth0 in some versions of the plasmoid or knetworkmanagement. Last time I checked it was possible in the plasmoid version from KDE 4.6.4 I was using but there were some KDE updates since so You never know  If it’s working the way You want it now I guess your best bet is to leave it as it is.

Greg
