Hi, I had enough of Windows and moved to Linux. I installed openSUSE 11.3 KDE Live CD, through a USB drive on my Netbook (Acer Aspire d260) and its working fine. I cannot connect to internet until I compile and make a program called “usb_modeswitch”. It is used to recognize USB modems.
I downloaded "make" (rpm) on another computer, copied the .rpm on this one and installed it and its fine. But I also need gcc which again depends on some other packages. Is there any way to download all the important and necessary packages and then install it on the netbook?.
If possible, please give me some suggestions on what packages should I install as I want to do programming stuff with C as well.
Your USB-drive might be able to read DVDs too. In this case burn the installation DVD and use yast2 to install from there (using it as your basic repo). It contains most of the stuff you may need to get your internet access up and running.
Hi, My netbook doesn’t have a cd rom, that’s why I did a USB install. Now there is no way I can connect to the internet except for the USB modem that I have. But for that I need to compile a program called “usb_modeswitch”, but as I installed a live cd, I don’t have gcc, make etc and its very difficult to check for dependencies of each .rpm and install them.
As I see it the only practical way is to find a Ethernet port and plug the machine into it to get the required packages. Unfortunately a CD has limited space and it is hard to guess exactly what a given computer is going to need.

Oh, I see. The misunderstanding is on my side. I was thinking that you have some external USB CD/DVD reader. But as long as you have access to some other computer you could copy the full installation DVD onto a USB-stick and use that as an installation repository.
Hi there, Yes that’s what Im taking about. Do I have to download the OpenSUSE 11.3 DVD or is there any specific CD or DVD image just for repository that I can download?
Hi, I use a USB modem on my Desktop to connect to internet but that USB is being recognized as a Mass storage device and not as a modem. So that’s where the problem is. So is there any way that I can download all the necessary updates, softwares and packages that comes by default with openSUSE on to my desktop and transfer that to my netbook?

No that I know (I did suggest such an idea to devs, time ago, it was not accepted). But you can
install an rpm with “rpm”, let it complain, find out the new package, download it on another
computer, copy it over by USB stick, try again, etc.
I have done this. It is tedious, but doable.
Or install the CD on another computer, then attempt the install of the needed things, and write down
the list.

Hi, thanks for that…I got this idea from the Ethernet port thing and it solved the problem. I did Internet connection sharing on my Windows Box and connected my netbook to it with a Cross Cable I had. I used my Windows Box’s internet and updated all the required packages. That was kinda new thing to me.
