I’d be grateful for help with a networking configuration problem.
My hardware is a LG X110 netbook with integrated UMTS modem, purchased from Telia in Sweden, which runs without problems under Windows XP. All networking connections (WLAN, ethernet, UMTS) are configured using Windows’ standard tools and work flawlessly (ethernet and WLAN using a typical router and UMTS using Telia’s wireless broadband).
Opensuse 11.1 was installed without trouble. Now how do I make WLAN and UMTS work?
The Yast hardware information tool describes the hardware as:
-Ericsson F3507g WMC Composite Device (dev/tty/ACMO)
and
-RTL8187SE Wireless LAN Controller
Networkmanager offers no suggestion other than for the wired ethernet interface (which works out of the box, by just plugging in an ethernet cable). Neither UMTS nor wireless are offered in Networkmanager’s “new connection” dialog. Under “edit connections” the options for “wireless” and “wired” are available, but again, no suggestions for configuration.
When trying to configure the WLAN interface using YAST it tells me that “Network is currently controlled by NetworkManager and its settings cannot be edited by YAST (…)”
YAST offers a configuration dialog under “Modem” where the Ericsson device is recognized but no configuration details are offered.
Can anyone suggest how to configure these devices?
For the WLAN you might want to read the openSUSE MSI wind page, although you do not have a MSI Wind. You do have the same network chip so the WLAN part is of interest.
Yes, sorry, it missed the DVD 11.1 kernel release, but will be in the next
update.
If you don’t want to wait for that (don’t know when it will be, probably a few
weeks at the earliest), you can install it from the kernel-of-the-day, which
can be found at: http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/HEAD/

I don’t know anything about the UMTS device, but the RTL8187SE does
not work with any current in-kernel Linux driver. There is a vendor
driver that is being used as the starting point for a port to Linux.
Alternatively, you should be able to use ndiswrapper and a Windows driver.
