Seems you need the development packages installed for kernel development

  • since 11.4 came out today, VMware doesn’t have a pre-built set of
modules for the kernel you’re using, so it will have to build them before
    it’ll run.

Fortunately, VMware has automated the process as long as you have the
kernel development packages installed along with the development tools.

kernel source is installed, any idea which packages I need more?

The same problem. I’ve installed the kernel development template. Kernel sources available. But vmplayer fails to recompile vmmon!

Solution ist here: VMware Workstation 7.1.3 runs great on Linux kernel 2.6.37 | LinuxInsight

I have tried the patch as mentioned in the article, but I didn’t succeed.

Anybody else has a better success rate?

Another solution.

Hi All,

finally solved, used the following:

patch-modules_v62-opensuse.sh
Change this script to use the following file (Unzipped):

vmware-7.1.3-2.6.37-9-generic.patch.zip

And working

Thanks for your help!

Tx - solved

Just a reminder for anybody:

  • install through Yast “patch”
  • rename file vmware-7.1.3-2.6.37-9-generic.patch to vmware-7.1.3-2.6.37-rc5.patch

Ivan

Excellent! what i just did was renaming the patch to “vmware-7.1.3-2.6.37-rc5.patch”, ran the .sh and have vmware workstation up and running.

Thanks for the info!

I have tried this, but when I attempt to run the script I get

patch-modules_v62-opensuse.sh: line 40: patch: command not found

Line 40 of the script is

 patch -p1 < "$curdir/$fpatch" || exit 5

I’m assuming that I need to install a package or two. Can anyone help please?
Thanks

Okay, I have done the patch thing. It seemed to work however now I get nothing at all when I try to start player or workstation. by gui, when I try from Temrinal I get this:

Thanks a lot! Now my VMPlayer works!

Okay, got it. haldaemon was not urning, once I started it vmplayer ran fine.
I have set haldaemon to start automatically. All is well with the world.
Regards Peter.

It’s fixed. I needed

Thanks to this thread

Thanks!! This works!!!

Hi all,

this question seems to be related to this thread so I post it here:

How can I patch kernel 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop for vmware 6.5.5?

up to now I always use the “vmware-build-modules” script and everything
works perfectly. but now the script complains:

/root/vmware-modules/vsock-only/./include/driver-config.h:35:28: fatal error: linux/autoconf.h: No such
file or directory

I think the script must be rewritten so that autoconf.h can be found. Right? Is there an updated version?

Thanks in advance,

Uwe.

do as you wish (i can’t answer your question), but most folks opt to
use the easy to install and use VirtualBox…its in the openSUSE
repos, open and use YaST and it will install the whole shebang (and
required kernel etc) and set up all the config files…or, at least
it did the last i installed it (been a while, on 10.3)

many have tried and failed to smile with VMware…
i guess some are smiling, maybe you will…
