I’m installed SuSe 11 from the live CD and I’m finding it’s using KDE.
Can anyone tell me how to switch to Gnome instead?
In past versions I can go to the start shutdown and I get a list of what i want to boot into.
I don’t see that in here.
In fact I don’t even get a place to enter my username, it auto logs in now. Hmmmmm…
Thanks
Doug:)
If you install by DVD you get a choice of Gnome or KDE. The DVD version is much more complete.

If you are currently in KDE you can go to Applications → Configuration → Install Software then enter the root password for your system then from the Filter Drop Down in Yast select Patterns then scroll down to Graphical Environments and then check Gnome Base System (and if would like select the Development packages as well just above there) and then click Accept let it install the packages and then reboot. Then from the login in screen down in the bottom right hand corner of the screen you can select Gnome as your default session. Should work fine for you…these instructions I am giving is if you are logged into KDE 4 not 3.X
I’ve installed Gnome like you mentioned. I rebooted and at the screen where it asks if I want to boot into Suse or Suse Failsafe and whatever else.
I looked in the lower Left corner and all it gives me is something like help
Language and something else but nothing gives me the choice between window managers Gnome or KDE.
The only place I see anything that even remotely has anything is in
Administrative setting and yast control center
System Configuration Editor
I see
File: /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager
Possible Values: yes, initial, no
Default Value: initial
Configuration Script: profiles, kde, susewm
Description:
building a global sycoca database, which can be used at first user
login in KDE
and then another place…
File: /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager
Possible Values: yes, initial, no
Default Value: initial
Configuration Script: profiles, kde, susewm
Description:
building a global sycoca database, which can be used at first user
login in KDE
But i’ll be darned if I can really find a place where I ca choose what I want to use.
I am downloading the DVD ISO and I’ll just re-install if I don’t find it before.

This is the grub boot screen
You need to use the Suse boot option
If you now just get logged in to kde - that’s because you have auto login enabled. Use Yast to disable
Security and Users - User and Group Management
Disable in there (expert options - login)
reboot
Now after you load the Normal Suse boot from Grub you will next get a login screen
Look lower left - sessions
select gnome
enter username and password
Hey caf4926
That worked great.
I did have auto login enabled. I Used Yast to get into the Security and Users - User and Group Management
Disable in there (expert options - login)
reboot
The only thing I had happen that was weird. Is I hit finish and it wrote to the file and then I rebooted.
The darn screen popped right back up and auto logged in again…
Hmmm I went back in and found it was still enabled. I did the uncheck the auto login again, hit finish and watched it save everything…
Rebooted and it worked great.
I’m now using Gnome.
As far as downloading the DVD goes. i did that and and burned the ISO. it was corrupted so no real biggy.
A few weeks ago I had downloaded the entire DVD to my wifes PC but everytime I’d try to burn it with nero I’d get some weird error about the block size being of range would you like to fix that? Something like that.
anyway, it never wold burn.
That’s the only time I’ve ever seen this multiple times and that’s when downloading SuSe. Hmmm.
Anyway, Thanks for all the help. Ive got it now!lol!
Why would you want to do that?
