How to make sound work on openSUSE

I noticed that sound on openSUSE is buggy sometimes, thus forcing us to type commands in order to hear/speak through the OS, like

STEAM_RUNTIME=0 steam

This is the only thing preventing me to use openSUSE full-time, right now I’m on Ubuntu but I’d like to change my OS to openSUSE but having to open the Terminal everytime I want to use Skype or Steam or whatever program I need is kind of annoying.

I noticed that I can only use my microphone if I change the input on Audacity, but I have to do it everytime I want to use programs that require sound.

Help D:

openSUSE 12.3
I use KDE but it happens with all DE’s.

Please state openSUSE version and desktop used.

Here are a couple of blogs with guidance wrt pulse audio and openSUSE … which are IMHO worth a read:

Or just try to disable pulseaudio in YaST->Hardware->Sound.
Select “Other” on the lower right and choose “PulseAudio Configuration”…

Thanks I’ll give it a read.

If you have further questions and need for assistance, we have a
multimedia forum that is perfectly suited for questions about getting
sound working. It’s also possible your questions are already answered
there. :slight_smile:
