How to make Dolphin panes horizontally?

Working with Dolphin in KDE 4.2.3 live CD in VMWare…

How do I get the panels to open horizontally rather than vertically? This is one of the major aspects that p***** me off about Dolphin over Konqueror. I do not work well with the panels this way.

Everyone is different and there was a time when Linux was moving in the direction of supporting this fact of reality. Dolphin, to me, represents the opposite - cookie-cutter app. Maybe you can still convince me it isn’t true. I cannot find a way to control the divisions.

Even Firefox has a simple little extension to do this. For Dolphin to overlook a critical and simple aspect in the interface design is what makes me suspicious of the intentions behind it.

Ok, enough ranting. I just want to get it to work more flexibly. Anyone have the intel on this?

Hey troll,

Stop *****ing about Dolphin and use Konqi if it suits you better. No one forces you to use Dolphin. Honestly, I can say for all that we’re tired of your rants

AFAIK this is not possible yet. Every new KDE4 release includes new Dolphin features, but this one is not there yet. Maybe you can do a feature request, or find out if this feature is already in the planning for future releases. On KDE4 4.3 beta2 it’s not there.

Remember the Terms and Conditions, please. I believe personal attacks are not allowed here. Personal opinions about software are though. Please, some civility. Thanks.

Thanks Knurpht. I’ll try that. Cheers!

heh, look who’s talking, the troll going on a rant and accusing without a shred of proof as he is “suspicious” about KDE4 conspiring against us all :\

then in another thread trying to accuse us by posting stuff about human rights without actually knowing how such rights get applied and work…

This is an openSUSE forum. We do not directly address KDE4 shortcomings nor are most of us directly involved with kde4 development or its future direction. If you want to rant about how much kde4/dolphin sucks or if you want a feature to be added, go to the kde forums and go wild there. You’ll have a much higher chance of catching the kde devs attentions there

Feature request submitted

So you are saying we should not discuss KDE problems here? Only SuSE issues?

No, I’m saying this isn’t the place to complain and rant about missing features in KDE4 since we don’t have that much power to influence KDE4. If you want to complain/rant or ask for features, either go to kde forum or contact the developer of the app itself. Discussing problems is one thing, accusing kde devs of conspiring against us all and then ranting how dolphin doesn’t have this or that is another thing and does not really belong here

So did you tell this to the guy who started the post you are referencing, in which there was ranting in favor and opposed to Dolphin? Or have you only single me out of the crowd?

The moderator appropriately moved it to the soapbox area. The description of the soapbox area says it is for expressing strong opinions. Those who did not personally attack were expressing strong opinions. That was fine.

THIS post, however is not about any of that. In fact, it is about how to make a certain feature work in Dolphin that was available in Konqueror. If you would like to discuss these other matters civilly we should go to the soapbox area or email each other. I’m open.

Here is not the place. Thanks.

you were singled out due to your past rants and baseless accusations of kde4 which were solely based on personal “suspicions” (paranoia?) without any factual evidence that kde4 is conspiring against us all. As I pointed out in one of your other threads where you accused kde4 of conspiracy by setting dolphin as default file manager (and which you falsely claimed it couldn’t be replaced by something else in Default Apps), dolphin is NOT intended to incorporate all the features of konqi. This is clearly stated by its author - Dolphin . Dolphin is a simple file manager targeted at noobs or people who are not power users. If one has to make the decision of which file manager to set as default and he knows that he tries to target both power users and noobs, dolphin will be the logical choice to set as default. It goes like this… if a noob user installs kde4, dolphin will offer him enough functionality without confusing him with a gazillion of options. If a power user installs kde4, he may not be happy with dolphin, but since he’s a power user, he has the ability and option to exchange dolphin for konqi to suite better his needs and this is only a few clicks away. If a noob is also not happy with dolphin, again he too has the option to set konqi as default file manager and again this is only a few clicks away.

THIS post, however is not about any of that. In fact, it is about how to make a certain feature work in Dolphin that was available in Konqueror. If you would like to discuss these other matters civilly we should go to the soapbox area or email each other. I’m open.

Let me quote you…

Ok, enough ranting

Micro… do you have ANY input into the thread whatsoever? If so it would be appreciated. If not, please don’t hijack this thread.

I suggest all this stops right now or I’ll close this thread.

@recraig2
You need to stop ranting about Dolphin (italics your words). This is NOT the first time is it. A simple question is all that is required and will serve you much better.

@microchip8
You are serving to explode the situation. I know you know better. Please.

No, I don’t have any input regarding your “feature” and there’s a high probability it won’t be added to dolphin

Do you have any proof to backup your baseless claims about kde4 conspiracy? If so, I’d appreciate it. If not, please cut the accusations and write your future threads in a different way.

These attacks must stop. You’ve been asked to stop and then right away you attack again. Not permitted.
