PLEASE can someone post this instruction set here?:’(
for Linux 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop i686 openSUSE 11.4 (i586)
The old instruction sets won’t work with opensuse 11.4 since there has been a huge change going on the new kernel, the way opensuse structures and package them!
The install of vmware Workstation worked without a glitch on previous versions of opensuse. We need a new instruction set for all to see!
Hi
So what error are you getting? Is it the autoconf.h and utsrelease.h not found?
I am trying to start up the vmware workstation as a normal user in a shell and receive this:
PicPaste - vmware_startup_error-CHNsosa4.png
The contents of the setup-8885.log is here: setup-8885.log - Pastebin.com
Whatever the error messages are, the application doesn’t find the necessary files to compile where they are supposed to be. because opensuse changed the interface to the kernel files!
Solution here perhaps, didn’t test yet.
VMware workstation 7.1.4 installed fine for me as an upgrade to 7.1.3 on openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64). To install 7.1.3 required I get some patches discussed on the vmware site VMware Communities: VMware Workstation 7.1.3 Linux kernel… and patch the modules to work with the 2.6.37 kernel.
To get VMware workstation to run after the install requires you to start haldaemon (/etc/init.d/haldaemon start) to accomplish manually.
This is something I worked out installing VMware Player. I had similar problems with Kerlnel Headers etc., but this solution solved all of these problems.
idiot proof simple install x64 version of VMware Player 3.1.4 on OpenSuse 11.4 x64
probably works with x86 aswell. pls check and comment
this fixes vmware complaining about problems with:
gcc
kernel headers
Problem with: Cannot execute command ’ ‘’’’/usr/bin/vmware-modconfig’’’ --icon=’’‘vmware-player’’’ --appname=’’‘VMware’’’ --gcc=’’’/usr/bin/gcc’’’ --headers=’’’/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop/build/include’’’ --gcc-ignore-minor ‘’. -blablabla
download latest vmware bundle from vmware homepage, for example VMware-Player-3.1.4-385536.x86_64.bundle
install vmware player by:
terminal: (change the name of the bundle according to your version
sudo sh VMware-Player-3.1.4-385536.x86_64.bundle
choose yast -> software management: (if you have some of this installed, make sure you update to the latest version)
install latest gcc
install latest gcc45
install latest libgcc45
install latest libgcc45-32bit
install latest libgcj45
install latest kernel-devel
install latest kernel-syms
terminal:
sudo vmware-modconfig --console --install-all
now you may start vmware player
perfect, all works
This should fix the problems with VMware workstation aswell.
no need to hassle with hacks tricks or tweaks.
CREDIT TO ME.
@Djarum123
Thank you very much, this solved my problem.
Ahmed
Thanks a lot!
This also works after a kernel update without “reinstalling” vmware workstation.
As a Linux Newbie I’ve tried to follow these instructions but I’m still having problems installing VMware-Workstation-Full-7.1.4-385536.x86_64 on opensuse 11.4.
When I attempt to start VMware Workstation I get the message “Before you can run VMware several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.” OK I’m expecting that from the instructions in this thread. When I click Install I get the following error message
Cannot execute command ’ ‘’’’/usr/bin/vmware-modconfig’’’ --icon=’’‘vmware-workstation’’’ --appname=’’‘VMware’’’ --gcc=’’’/usr/bin/gcc’’’ --headers=’’’/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/build/include’’’ --gcc-ignore-minor ‘’.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
Sorry but I don’t yet know where there might be log files to shed more light on this.
Thanks
Read Post #8, the last command is the solution.
meierkurt123 many thanks for your response.
Unfortunately its not fixed my problem.
I have the following installed:
gcc 4.5-19.1
gcc45 4.5.1_20101208-9.8
libgcc45 4.5.1_20101208-9.8
libgcc45-32bit 4.5.1_20101208-9.8
libgcj45 4.5.1_20101208-9.8
kernel-default-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
kernel-desktop 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
kernel-desktop-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
kernel-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
kernel-firmware 2.6.38-1.2.1
kernel-source 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
kernel-syms 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
kernel-xen-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
(I may have more than I need installed - I was originally getting error messages that the kernel source could not be found but this is not now occurring. Not knowing any better I kept adding packages in an attempt to clear the error.)
I’ve followed the instructions in Post 8
I’m using su rather than sodo and ran vmware-modconfig --console --install-all at the root prompt.
I got the following feedback:
Stopping VMware services:
VMware USB Arbitrator done
VM communication interface socket family done
Virtual machine communication interface done
Virtual machine monitor done
Blocking file system failed
Unable to stop services
Please can you advise how I can stop the Blocking file system service as I presume this is whats stopping the command from completing.
Thanks

This is just a silly guess.
Don’t know if you are still looking but, try removing:
>kernel-default-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
>kernel-desktop 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
>kernel-desktop-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
>kernel-xen-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
then trying again.
josephkk,
Tried your suggestion but running vmware-modconfig --console --install-all now gives me the error message “gcc and kernel headers must be installed” at the command prompt.
Any further thoughts?
Cheers
I had a similar problem, and found that starting haldaemon before running vmplayer enabled vmplayer to start up:
sudo /etc/init.d/haldaemon start
My problem now is that the vmware processes aren’t loading on startup, described here. But at least it works if I load it manually after logging in.
The old instruction sets won’t work with opensuse 11.4 since there has been a huge change going on the new kernel, the way opensuse structures and package them!
The install of vmware Workstation worked without a glitch on previous versions of opensuse. We need a new instruction set for all to see!
dimesio thanks for the tip. Unfortunately it’s not worked for me.
To correct the missing kernel headers error message I’ve had to reinstall
kernel-default-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
kernel-desktop 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
kernel-desktop-devel 2.6.37.6-0.5.1
I ran /etc/init.d/haldaemon start before starting the vmware workstation application. I still received the error message outlined in my post #11 above.
I attempted to restart the vmware service and received the following messages
/etc/rc.d/vmware restart
Stopping VMware services:
VMware USB Arbitrator done
VM communication interface socket family done
Virtual machine communication interface done
Virtual machine monitor done
Blocking file system done
Starting VMware services:
VMware USB Arbitrator done
Virtual machine monitor failed
Virtual machine communication interface failed
VM communication interface socket family failed
Blocking file system failed
Virtual ethernet failed
I’m not sure whether this is the expected result because the kernel has not been recompiled or whether these are issues.
So I’m no further forward. Has anyone got any further suggestions?
Thanks
After you reinstalled the kernel headers you had removed, did you re-run vmware-modconfig --console --install-all? If not, try that.
There should be a vmware-installer log in /var/log.
Yes I tried running vmware-modconfig --console --install-all which gave me the error message I reported before:
Stopping VMware services:
VMware USB Arbitrator done
VM communication interface socket family done
Virtual machine communication interface done
Virtual machine monitor done
Blocking file system failed
Unable to stop services
I’ve had a look at the vmware-installer log in /var/log but its not very helpful.
The last entry there is from the last attempt to install the software and not when I try to run the vmware-modconfig command.
Anyway here’s the output
