I have installed 10.3 with GNOME onto my machine, which went ok. I am using dialup. The modem was recognised during installed. When attempting to configure it for my ISP, an error message states “smpppd needs to be installed”. Option is to select contiune, then it states its reading installed packages, followed by another message stating “required packages could not be installed”.
Where can I get smppd and how is it installed ?
Second question
Is KDE better to use or setup for the modem ?
On the first question: you probably need to enable the wider range of repositories in Yast and then try again. In Yast → Software → Community repositories you tick what you need with these ywo cautions:
1: unless you are expert, don’t tick any “build service”
2: do enable at least main repo oss, main repo non oss, main update, packman, videolan.
Its a one click install . . . but I need to be on the Net for that :-\
But I did select the Install option and then chose save instead of install, but that only saved a link to the file. Can I get the file from anywhere else ? And once downloaded, how are they installed ie doubleclicking ?
I have the CD vice the DVD. Modem is a Motorola SM56 Data Fax modem, internal.
I also use dial-up and vaguely remember similar problems. You might search
for something that provides smpppd (I’m using kinternet with gnome if it
helps) instead of something called smpppd.
You can use wvdial from the terminal as an alternative. It has a config file
for you to put your ISP information in. wvdial is also useful for adding
the nvidia driver as you often have to be out of the graphical interface to
add the driver. If I would use kinternet and connect, then init 3 to leave
the gui, my connection would close. For that matter, you should also be
able to use wvdial with gnome, kde or whatever you’re using, but I haven’t
tried it yet.
