How to install Banshee?

I want to install the latest version on my system, so I go to the Banshee download site, and do the install for SuSE 11.0. That brings up the Yast2 installer, which tries to do the install, but barfs with message something like “banshee-1-backend-engine-gtkstreamer-1-1.5.1-1.1.i586 required, uninstallable providers bansheexxxx[OpenSUSE_11.0], Conflict resolution: following actions will be done” with a long list of actions. So I click on “OK-Try Again”, but it doesn’t DO anything, just endlessly repeats the same message.

Is there some way to bypass this, and get it to actually install?

Thanks,
James

Going to the Bashee site to read up on Banshee is a good idea. Note I state “to read up”. To download from such a site is often a bad idea for a new user, at least it is a bad idea without checking first to see if it is in the repositories.

I always recommend users setup their openSUSE with 4 software repositories. Those 4 are OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman. Just those 4. No others. None. You can find guidance for those 4 here for openSUSE-11.0: Repositories/11.0 - openSUSE-Community The chances are OSS, non-OSS, and Update are already setup, and all you need do is add Packman. If you have others, disable them! Only OSS, Non-OSS, Update and Packman.

Then go to YaST > Software > Software Management, change the “filter” to “search” and search for and install banshee.

The idea is you install from approved repositories, and NOT from the developers web site. Installing from the developers web site is the MS-Windows way. Its not the Linux way.

Also, since the banshee you download will be missing codecs, you should also replace any Novell/SuSE-GmbH gstreamer packages with Packman packaged gstreamer packages. You can tell packman packaged versions with the “pm” in the version number.

I recommend you take a look at this guide for some software installation hints: openSUSE software installation hints - openSUSE Forums

I just re-read your post …

I see you want the “latest” banshee.

Ok, then setup the 4 repositories I recommend. JUST those 4.

Then go to webpin search engine and search on banshee. That gives this:
Webpin search for banshee

So from that I can see there is a 1.5.1 of banshee available:
Index of /repositories/Banshee/openSUSE_11.0

ok, its not 1.5.2, but its the next best thing. If you wait a couple of weeks someone will probably package 1.5.2.

To install 1.5.1, with the 4 repos I already mentioned setup, simply type:

zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Banshee/openSUSE_11.0 banshee
zypper install banshee
zypper rr banshee

Well, I mis-stated a bit  I wanted to install a version more recent than the 0.13 that’s in the default SuSE 11.0 distribution - one that I hoped would let me copy CDs to .mp3 files (or something that works on my player), and transfer them to a Creative Zen Vision:M player.

Ok, then setup the 4 repositories I recommend. JUST those 4.

I tried using the four repositories, but as before get the message “Nothing provides mono(mono.Zeroconf) = 3.0.0.80 needed by banshee…”

(But thanks for the information on setting up community repositories. It would have saved me a lot of time & frustration if I’d had it from when I did the original install…)

I’ll give your other suggestions a try when I have a spare moment (got to go do paying work now). However, I’m not wedded to banshee, just want some way to get audio from CD to my player with minimum hassle… I did try to read up on the Banshee site, but most of the user manual seems to be in a Wiki, which has been offline whenever I’ve tried to look at it.

Thanks,
James
