How to get wireless extensions working with Novatel USB modem?

OS is a freshly installed 12.2; computer is a ASUS X54H; modem is a Novatel USB551 LTE (a version made for Verizon). The modem works fine in Windows 7, but that still sucks.

lsusb shows it; scrolling through all that dmesg output shows the device in certain places with no mention of firmware. This modem is listed as linux compatible by Novatel, and I did have another of the same model working in 12.1 at one time.

iwconfig shows:

wwan0 no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=15 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off

wlan0 is a pcie wireless built into the ASUS, so wwan0 has to be the usb modem.

Running iwlist scan tells us that wwan0 interface does not support scanning.

What do I have to do to get this thing to work, or what more info do you need?

Hmmm! getting plenty of looks but no replies. Just thought this could be as simple as not having the right settings in Network Manager. What I put, from an older post, was:

Number: #777
Username: to (phonenumber)@vzw4g.com
password: vzw

the original post used vzw3g.com, so I changed it to 4g, but have also tried 3g with the same results. Does anyone know the correct settings for Verizon 4g LTE modems?
