How to get sshd started on OpenSUSE 13.2?

I’m trying to use scp after installing OpenSUSE 13.2, so I looked it up in the documentation. It says to get the management tool for sshd by bringing up yast, and going to software management. Then search for “yast2-sshd”. All good until I try the search, both in yast and yast2. “Yast2-sshd” is not found, and I don’t see it in “Network Services” using just yast2.

What’s the secret code here? How do I start the sshd daemon so that I can use scp? I’ve used OpenSUSE before, and this was a lot easier, I think that it was just in yast2 under “Network Services”.

Any clues for the clueless about where this is managed? Things seem to have changed since I was last here, not really surprising, since it’s been a couple of years at least.

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

To enable SSH services to the box you’ve installed:
systemctl enable sshd
systemctl start sshd

However, it sounds like you’re trying to scp from the box rather than into it? Which is the case?

Remember to open port 22 in the firewall also, this can be done in the YAST / Firewall application.

Hi,

Enabling the sshd service via yast2 or systemctl is not enough, like what Miku said you need to open the port in the firewall via

yast2 firewall

By the way a simple

nmap localhost

should tell you which port are open (if nmap is installed)

Thanks much for the quick replies…I did finally find it in yast2 under “Services Manager”, not where I remembered it being. After enabling it there, I added the service to the firewall, again in yast2. So I can now run WINSCP into my Linux virtual machine, so I’m happy.

Never did find the specific tool for managing just sshd, but turns out that what I’m doing is generic enough I didn’t need it anyways smile.

Again, thanks.

It appears to be a documentation bug, there is no “yast2-sshd” that I
can see.

Yes…none the less, since this Linux distribution didn’t cost me anything, I’ve already gotten way more out of it than I paid (free OpenSUSE release and free VMware Player). I’m not going to let a few time-consuming documentation bugs get me to stop using this excellent tool smile. I really appreciate the help, though, and hope to repay that at some point.

Well, a way to contribute is reporting bugs.

The doc.opensuse.org site should say where to report. If it doesn’t,
then try Bugzilla, there is an entry for documentation. The forums here
are just a users help other users place
