I tried googling for a solution, but I’m stumped. Can anyone help me please?

Your best source of information is here:
http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi
Unfortunately this page seems to be down today(1/18/09). (At least from here.)
It should be back online by tomorrow.

The site is back up. Here is your link:

Canon do offer some printer drivers, for some of its inkjet printers;

they offer linux drivers for your ip1000;

if you go here,

Canon

and download the rpm files, as that is what opensuse uses;

download the common package and the rpm package for the ip1000

**but install the common package first;
**
(in the same way that swerdna advised for brother printers)

HowTo Install a Brother Laser Printer HL-2040 in Suse 10.x, 11.x + User Notes

I would suggest installing by right-clicking firstly on the common package and select install with package installer which should open YaST: enter your substitute user (su or root) password;

close YaST if still open after this;

then again right-click on the ip1000; and follow the above;

hopefully … that will work …

if it does not give you immediate printer recognition in … say … OpenOffice, try opening CUPS: common unix printing system;

by entering the line listed below in your browser line;

http://localhost:631/

I would have thought you select “add printer” and it should have your canon available as an option;

PV was quite right that openprinting is usually THE SOURCE for linux printing but I find the entry for the ip1000 confusing

so would suggest you try the above;

let us know how you get along

It keeps saying Printer Driver not detected. And I’ve already downloaded the hplip-hpijs package.

And i don’t know what to do in cups.

  1. when you say

It keeps saying Printer Driver not detected

can you describe (in some detail) what you have done, and when you get this message please;

And I’ve already downloaded the hplip-hpijs package.

as I understand it, hplip is only to help hewlett-packard printers run; it would not help with a canon printer

  1. if you are really keen to get your printer running quickly and well, I suggest you go to this site:

ZEDOnet | Download | Download TurboPrint

and get turboprint;

you can see from this page

ZEDOnet | Supported Printers | TurboPrint 2 - Printer Drivers for Linux - Supported Printers

that your printer is supported; to get the full version, it will cost you a few dollars, but many folks value their printers, and wish to use them; we use turboprint for our canon printers, and it works very well

Thanks. it works.

great;

can you tell us what you did to get it to work;

did you for example use the canon rpm drivers from their website?

It would be a great help to others following to hear what worked so well for you

sure, I used the Turbo Print.

oh good; it works very well; all best wishes
