I finally got a HP Scanjet Proffessional 3000 Document scanner for mobile use (I did not select the model myself). It is fine hardware, but seems not to be supported in linux. I tried yast → scanner, but it is not listed. HP Linux Imaging and Printing tells Sorry, HP Scanjet single function scanners are not supported by HPLIP. For possible Linux support, please visit: SANE - Scanner Access Now Easy, but it is not listed.
Is it possible to use the windows driver through wine? (I guess this is a rather stupid question).
Is there any other, preferably not to dangerous for the hardware, way to try using a scanner not supported by SANE?

As a first step, plug it in, run ‘lsusb’ and tell us what it reports.

Ho hum. So it’s not listed in the SANE lists
Somebody who knows something may pop up on here, but IMHO you’re more
likely to get a response on the opensuse mailing list, which the suse
guru watches. Or just go straight to the sane mailing list or IRC and
ask there would perhaps be quickest.
Yes, I was afraid it was not such an easy task. I will try the SANE mailing list, as this seems to be a very active project. But of course, anybody with any other ideas is welcome…
I was lurking on this thread, and I’m glad to read its working for you now. For anyone else who may be curious about the sane mailing list, if one types:
man sane
one will read:
SANE mailing list
There is a mailing list for the purpose of discussing the SANE standard and its implementations: sane-devel.
Despite its name, the list is not only intended for developers, but also for users. There are also some
more lists for special topics, however, for users, sane-devel is the right list. How to subscribe and
unsubscribe: http://www.sane-project.org/mailing-lists.html.
The drivers were sent to me privately from somebody at hp, who works on the sane project. As for a place to publicly download them, the answer I got was:
HP doesn’t have a consistent strategy for dealing with Linux. Therefore we don’t officially publish these drivers yet. They are only given out as needed when someone contacts HP
So, I would suggest contacting HP…also in order to increase the awareness for the existence of linux users on these devices.
In general, HP have a very good reputation with Linux support regarding their printers/multifunction devices, but unusually, the Scanjet range seems to be more problematic with respect to SANE drivers (depending on model).
