We have SuSe 10.3 installed to run an industrial software package. Everything works fine except the wireless access point connection. The problem is that we cannot get a wireless connection to one of our access points that uses WEP key 3. This wireless AP does not use WEP key 1. Knetworkmanager seems to only take WEP key 1 even if key 3 is set as default in network manger setup under YAST. If we change the AP temporarily to WEP key 1, everthing works fine. What’s going here? Why cann’t we use keys 2, 3, or 4?
We cannot use SuSe 11.0 for compatibility reasons with the industrial software.
I tried to compile a new version of knetworkmanager and network manager, but ran into all kinds of dependency problems. So I gave up and installed WiFi-radar(from here PackMan :: Package details for wifi-radar ) It just works. I can specify any WEP key (1,2,3, or 4) in the AP configure or setup popup menu that appears when you click the Edit button.
I would still like to know why knetworkmanager that comes with SuSe 10.3 distribution does not work with WEP keys 2,3 or 4. I cannot believe it only works with default key 1. I must be missing something in the configuration.
Well, KDE is an ever-going work in progress; although it manages to be an excellent all-rounder, there are many stand-alone utilities that arguably work better that the default KDE ones (it seems you just discovered one). Glad you found a solution that satisfies your needs - and glad you shared it with the rest of the community; I live in a relatively secluded area so encryption keys have never been a necessity…
