How to enable nvidia drivers for GTX1080?

Hi,

I bought an AlienWare 17 r4 with an nvidia gtx1080 card. I installed the drivers following https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers#Recommended_Procedure
When I reboot, the nvidia driver isn’t loaded and when I start the nvidia app it says I need to run nvidia-xconfig. But this makes xorg files which aren used any more. Also, X won’t start when I do this anyway.

The difficult part is, I think, that this machine has 2 video cards BUT the gtx1080 is NOT an Optimus card. There is no Optimus technology. Basically, when in Windows, you can press Fn + F7 to switch the card. Also, a reboot is required.

So, now… How do I get this card working of xorg.conf isn’t?

I am using Gnome3 on Leap 42.2

An xorg.conf is still used if it exists, otherwise it wouldn’t break X… :wink:
Although nowadays (since years), snippets in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ are the preferred way.

But there is no need to “enable” the nvidia driver, it is used automatically if it is installed (and works).

For some reason it does not seem to work (or cannot be loaded) in your case though, the fact that X fails to start with the xorg.conf may suggest that too.

Please post a list of the installed nvidia packages, and the Xorg log too. (I think with GNOME this is located somewhere in ~/.local/share/, but I’m not sure. If you don’t find it, please switch the DISPLAYMANAGER to xdm in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and reboot, you can switch it back to gdm right after the login screen appears as the log file should be created in /var/log/Xorg.0.log then. Another option would be to “extract” the X log from systemd’s journal with journalctl, but I’m not sure how to do that either (I’m using kdm here, which does still create /var/log/Xorg.0.log).

The most likely problem I think is that you actually are using the Intel card though. Then the nvidia driver will not work of course.
Maybe there’s a way to switch the card permanently in the BIOS/EFI settings?

I can’t disable the Intel, it probably is a pass through. Can I blacklist intel or something? BTW, when I don’t do the Xorg config, the Nouveau driver is used, so it seems that the nvidia card is active.

Ok, that’s with the xorg.conf, and the nvidia driver doesn’t find a card.

I would rather see a log from a working X though, without an xorg.conf, to see what driver is used in that case.

Yes, you can, but I doubt it would help.
If the intel card is in use, it will be in use regardless.

But actually your lspci output shows that the intel kernel module is not loaded at all anyway.

Hm.
Then it seems to be a “bug” in the nvidia driver, or it doesn’t support your card (although it should).

Maybe it would help to explicitly specify the card in the xorg.conf via a line like this in the “Device” section:

Is this an Optimus hybrid graphics machine?? Have you tried bimblebee or prime??

There is no Optimus technology on the GTX1080. Or at least not on this one. I did however tried bumblebee following the SUSE manual. It just resultant in a kernel panic.

You disabled nouveau via the “nouveau.modeset=0” kernel option…

It’s a different way to switch between the intel and nvidia chips on Optimus systems.

Yes, the card is correctly detected now, but no usable screen is found.
Could you maybe post your xorg.conf?

You probably need to uncomment the lines in /etc/ld.so.conf.d/nvidia-gfxG04.conf so that nvidia’s OpenGL libraries are found. They are disabled during installation if an intel card is detected (because they break intel’s OpenGL support).

That’s only about OpenGL support though, and unrelated to your primary problem that the nvidia driver doesn’t work/isn’t used in the first place.

Just a note. Some one else had problems recently following the same install method. I didn’t because some of the additions it was going to make didn’t make much sense so I simply searched for nvidia in yast software management and selected items from that. I did this from a working Nouveau set up.

I added


Modes      "3840x2160"

to Section “Screen” SubSection “Display” but that didn’t do anything.

It probably doesn’t help that Linux isn’t recognizing the monitor: 17.3 inch UHD (3840 x 2160) IPS Anti-Glare 300-nits
