In notification area there’s this little icon that looks like a bug and shows available updates. Contrary to most users I want to install them automatically. I managed to achieve that on another machine but can’t replicate it here.
There are settings for Apper but I suspect this little bug icon comes from another applet/widget because nothing I tried affects it. Apper’s icon is a green arrow, isn’t it?

Not at all, there’s even a YaST module to set up a cron job that runs daily/weekly and installs all updates with zypper…

No. This is apper. That icon actually comes from the currently configured desktop theme.
But even if it weren’t, it doesn’t really matter in the end how you install the updates. There’s only one RPM database in the system, and all tools see which packages are installed, as all of them use rpm in the end. And actually all of them even use libzypp…
And, as you wrote you can setup automatic installation of updates in Apper’s settings. And it’s even possible to enable a daily PackageKit installation cronjob, have a look at /etc/sysconfig/packagekit-background which would even run when you are not logged in. (Apper is just a KDE frontend to PackageKit)
Yes, I’ve read online update articles in openSUSE wiki, all applets eventually lead to libzypp, it’s that I can’t figure out how to make this little “bug” icon to autoupdate itself. If it’s Apper, then I enabled this in Apper settings already but the “bug” still shows up and waits for clicks.
Then remove or hide it in the system tray settings.
If updates are installed automatically, it makes no sense to have it in the system tray anyway.
(and if you just hide it, you could always still reach it via the small “up” arrow just left of the digital clock)
You cannot “make this little bug icon to autoupdate itself”, you can only make Apper, the daemon, download and install updates automatically.
On the machine where I managed it to work I never get to see “bug” icon itself but whenever Apper finds updates there’s a notification in the usual notification area. On the machine I’m trying to configure this never happens and, as far as I can see, updates are not applied automatically at all.
And how exactly did you configure it? “Configure Desktop”->“Apper Software Management”->Settings?
For this to work, the “Apper” service must not be disabled though, so check in “Configure Desktop”->“Startup and Shutdown”->“Service Management” that it is enabled and running.
PS, I think I was not completely clear before. The updater icon should of course also refresh its state, at least in the configured intervals (i.e. once a day by default). I don’t really know how exactly it will behave though, as I never used that feature myself. (I do want to see what updates are available, and install them when I feel it’s ok to do so… )
In system-settings>Apper Software Management, click the spanner at the top right, choose Configuration. There you can set automatic updates.
Apparently you can also set the “bug” icon not to show at all, etc.
