All my photos saved on digikam are subjected to compression. Is there any way to go around this in the program?
This makes serious photo editing somewhat impossible.

Not sure how you mean. Photos are in the format they come off the camera, which is usually JPEG, and yes that means that there are losses roundtripping through editing. If your camera supports RAW, you can configure your camera to use that, but of course, your memory card won’t hold so many photos any more. So digikam is not responsible for these format decisions, you are.

open the setup and find where you can change it…on mine i go
Settings > Configure digiKam > Save Images > and set the quality level
desired…
and, if you are working with RAW files you visit that page also…

for ‘serious’ editing i’d recommend GIMP or better…
