An idea how to disable automount of USB drives ?
I use KDE 3.5.10
I don’t want to add an entry in fstab, because it must stop mounting all USB keys.
I would like to avoid editing udev rules, but rather to stop the good service : which one ? autofs is already off :\

You want to disable KDE 3 from automatically mounting USB external media?
People usually ask the contrary. No idea how to do that…
No, it is not a service, it is rather complex. Udev, hal, everything. You
will have to edit or remove rules.
The easiest is to cut the cable.

If all else fails, you could remove or blacklist the usb module, so no usb devices would be recognized, including kbd, mouse, etc.
In KDE 4.x you can set mount rules for the current user in system-settings>removable devices, which might do the trick, but I don’t recall if KDE 3.5 has something like it.

Blacklisting is no warranty. The kernel will not automatically load it, but
it may be loaded manually by something else. Safer to remove the module.

You should be able to prevent usb storage mounting by configuring a hal policy (as KDE3 relies on hal for removable device handling). I’ll refer you to this old thread:
http://forums.opensuse.org/archives/sls-archives/archives-suse-linux/archives-general-questions/373410-how-disable-automount.html#post1746429
The thread is for suse 10.1, but you should be able to find the relevant hal policy config file for your OS version, and edit accordingly.
Thread is gone, any chance to still find it somewhere?
You’re posting to a very old thread. Lots has changed. I recommend you start a new thread for this, including desktop environment in use.
