how to creat a USB stick from openSUSE 12.2 DVD iso file and install

i have followed the instructions on SDB:Live USB stick - openSUSE shows on Bootable USB from DVD or Net-install section. I have downloaded the DVD iso file and the two utility files mentioned in the install instruction. I copied the DVD iso file and decompressed files included in syslinux zip package to the USB stick, the USB stick file system is NTFS, for FAT32 cannot store a single file over 4 GB. I run the command line and type the command, the result is same with the picture showed in the instruction. Then i reboot my PC and set the USB stick as the first boot device. An error like " Cannot find an operation system, please remove the disk and press ctrl+alt+del to restart" appeared on the screen. My USB stick is HP v155w at 8GB. My PC doesn’t have a ODD, and I can only install a system from USB media(mainly by a USB stick). How could i install openSUSE ? Many thanks for giving me some hints.

Perhaps you should give my bash script I have here a try?

You need to make sure the USB drive is booted before your hard drive, but I would guess based your failure to boot message, this indicates that this is already true.

Thank You,

That’s not what the instructions say. You do not “copy” the iso file.

Coincidentally, I looked at those this morning and realised that the
way that I was told to do it does not seem to appear in those
instructions.

I installed Imagewriter - it’s in the usual openSUSE OSS repo - and
then used that to copy the file to the USB stick. It’s got a simple GUI
interface and is dead easy to use.

AFAIK you need to run " isohybrid DVD-iso " first.

I can confirm that this script works great. I used it to make a bootable 8GB usb stick with OpenSUSE 12.1 32bit DVD. I then used the stick to install on two 32 bit systems here without any problems.

I’ve been using Imagewriter alone for some time without needing
isohybrid. In fact, I only heard about it for the first time this
morning.

Probably the action if included in imagewriter. IIRC only the header of the iso is being changed by isohybrid.

The instructions say you need it for the dvd iso, not for the cd iso -
probably because it has already been done by the makers.

Thank you for your replying. I tried to install a live-cd version by using Imagewriter to creat the USB installation media and installed successfullly.
The official instruction don’t say this method could suit for a DVD iso, so i don’t have a try. I will try a few hours later for my PC is at home.

I will try this first, thank you

Exclude the USB stick device, my PC can only boot from the internal HDD, so if the pc select the HDD as the first boot device, it will goes into the OS directly. I will try your script first, thank you

The ability to boot from an external hard drive or USB thumb depends on a BIOS setting you often must select. On my Dell, I must place USB devices as booting before the internal hard drive for it to work. The only negative thing this causes is a boot failure if you have a non-bootable USB drive attached all of the time. Since it is a BIOS setting, it can be changed to on only when you need to boot from a USB drive. If you have never looked at your BIOS setup, it sounds like a time to look within your PC. Some PC’s give you just a couple of seconds to press the DEL key or press F10 right at reboot to start your BIOS setup session… You must consult your PC manual to find out more information.

Thank You,

Some motherboards - my new Gigabyte one, for instance - don’t seem to have a boot from USB option selectable in the BIOS setup. Instead, you have to hold down the F12 key during a power-on boot. This brings up a boot menu that lets you select the USB stick (if plugged in).

Imagewriter is all I’ve needed for both CD and DVD iso’s.
