How to connect to weak signal wireless networks? openSUSE 12.1, kernel 3.4, KDE 4.8

Hi,
How can I connect a weak signal wireless connection? I usually connect to “Thai Dat 3” (image below) on Windows but I can not do it on openSUSE. :frowning:

Any help? :frowning:

i can’t really help, but while you are waiting on a wireless guru here
is something you can try:

maybe if you moved the machine some you would get to a path with not
so much between your machine and the entry point for the “Thai Dat 3”
system…everything between your machines antenna and their antenna
knocks down the signal strength some…so, less stuff between and you
get more signal!

so, try moving your machine…if yours is a laptop/netop/tablet it
may help to just slowly rotating the screen…or maybe move just a
foot or ten closer to the window (out of which maybe the “Thai Dat 3”
has direct line-of-sight, which is what you want)…

if yours is a desktop/tower and your wireless card has a stubby little
antenna on it sticking out the back, you may need to rotate the tower so
the signals don’t have to go through the case on the way to the two
antennas…

and, if it is a card with an external antenna you can usually unscrew
those and attach a longer antenna which will “catch” weaker signals
(check your card maker’s site for a “hi-gain antenna” for your
card)…you can even get a directional antenna which can be mounted
outside and pointed directly at the servicing systems antenna…

but, be a little careful…if you get too creative with just plain wires
running from your machine to a home made antenna you probably won’t get
satisfactory results, and you may well damage your machine’s wifi
electronics …antenna design is a pretty sophisticated thing…ask any
amateur radio operator…
