how to communicate with LMHOSTS file in windows/Linux

i have no WINS server in my windows based network but the LMHOST file so how can i communicate with samba??
do i need to check off WINS server option in samba.??

because the network can see the samba server but can not communicate with it.

i am using samba3 in opensuse 11.1

If you want to be sure LMHOST is used be sure you have something like this
in /etc/samba/smb.conf:


name resolve order = lmhosts bcast host wins

The order of the parameters is the order Samba uses to resolve names.

It sounds to me like your firewall may be blocking SAMBA traffic. Look here
for help with Samba and your firewall.
