how to choose a graphics display adapter card

The eternal question, certainly frequently asked, but still …
Which resources are available to help choosing the right graphics
card for a job? The many Linux hardware compatibility lists in
the 'net all seem to require that I already know a specific
card model for which I can then check whether it will work with
Linux.

Specifically, after a big disappointment with a Matrox G550 Dual
DVI PCIe card I am now looking for a replacement that will
satisfy the following, apparently very high and unusual
requirements:

  • PCI Express card
  • no fan
  • two DVI-I outputs
  • both supporting resolutions up to 1920x1200
  • at the same time
  • even if the monitors are connected via DVI
  • even if I’m running Linux (preferably openSUSE)
  • and even if it is a 64 bit installation.

OTOH, I do not need any gaming capability, which seems to be the
main concern for the majority of reviewers.

So how would I go about finding a suitable card? Is there a
compatibility database that can be queried for attributes
such as slot type, fan (yes/no), type and number of usable
output connectors or maximum usable resolution with Linux?

Thanks in advance for any hints.

See my sig for current nVidia card. I have never had issue with any nVidia card. My card did come with a Fan - but I removed it and replaced it with a heatsink: Zalman VNF100 Fanless VGA Cooler

Works a treat. And you can’t hear a thing.

Nvidia are usually the best there is a list here
The 9800 GT works OOTB and would fit you requirements
