Hi, i’m new in openSUSE. I changed my window manager to Kwin (KDE4) in Session Management. This crashed my desktop. When I log in my lcd only shows a blank screen… I need to change the window manager to Kwin (KDE3) but from console!!! How can I do?
Try changing to a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F1), login with your user, and edit the file ~/.dmrc. I don’t know the valid options for Session but kde3 would be a good bet … or default (try a name from /usr/share/xsessions/ without the .desktop).
One important thing is to ensure that the file is not public (“chmod 600 ~./dmrc” will do as 600 means “only readable and writable to you”).

Thanks for reply. But you didn’t understand. I need to switch between windows managers, like Kwin (KDE3), Kwin (KDE4) and Compiz… The Kwin (KDE4) crashed my system, so I need Kwin (KD3) or Compiz. How can I do this?
Thanks…

I imagine… change the entry in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager,
run SuSEconfig and restart X… at least something like that would
work in 10.x.
Compiz adds some complexity to this… especially if you need to
disable Composite on your card… that usually requires an edit
to your Xorg.conf file.
Hi cjcox… Thanky for reply… But this isn’t the problem. I don’t have to switch between kdm, xdm, gdm… No! I have to switch between window managers like compiz, kwin, metacity… I need the KDE3’s Kwin because KDE4’s Kwin crashed my system.
When you go KDE Control Center > KDE Components > Session Management, you have options to switch between window managers. So I have to do this, but from console.
Anyone can help me?
Thanks people for trying… Anyone?
WOW, I resolved the problem!!! Thanks boys… I started ICEWM and run kcontrol to change the window manager!!!
From console it might be kwin --replace
From console it might be kwin --replace
