How to change resolution to specific setting? 11.2.

Hey everybody,

Is there a way to change my resolution to something specific? I was trying to make my display “less-widescreen” when I accidently made it completely changed.

From the sax2 command, there is only 14001050 and 16001200, both that are not what I’m looking for and messes up my display. Now, I can’t change it back to the original, much less the one I’m looking for (1600*900).

Can somebody please help?

Thanks.

From a console login

login as user at the cli, then type su -
followed by root password

now do this

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak

Then type: reboot

You will now have no xorg.conf and the system should pick things up automatically.
Your settings are backed up in xorg.conf.bak (if you need them)

cat, thanks for replying.

Somehow, that did not work. The panel at the bottom ends about halfway through the screen, probably because the resolution ratio is not correct. It did make it better a little, though.

Is there a way to change it to the one I want? 1600*900?

And is there a good photohosting site like photobucket to upload screenshots? Photobucket doesn’t work with linux.

Did you ever explain what graphics device and drivers you have?

My graphics card is the NVidia GeForce 6100 nForce 430. I have the latest drivers. Everything is ok with Windows…

You may need to know the model of the machine he is using. I
just posted something on the hardware forum: I found on a
Lenovo desktop with the same video which gives a similar
result on install. The BIOS and/or hardware implementation on
this box gives me a conflict on boot between APIC and the
nvidia card. As a result, the chipset cannot be scanned -
hence no device specific info is passed to the system. I’ve
had to manually configure a couple of settings in xorg.conf
for the last 2-3 releases of openSUSE and just now found the
problem from the boot log of 11.2. Auto-config works only if
all the players are on the same page of the song book.

Thanks, that made a huge difference. Everything used to be very stretched out and awkward.

Now, everything is in the normal widescreen format, but there is one problem. The taskbar at the bottom fills up only about halfway through the screen. :frowning:

http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/273/thisisawesome.jpg

And a 2nd thing, I believe I accidentally deleted to rectangular box on my desktop. How can I get it back?

Thanks again.

Sorry for the double post, but once I edited something once it didn’t allow me to edit it again.

Upon further investigation, it appears that the driver did do the trick, and my resolution is now 1600x900. However, the two problems stated in the above post I still need help with.

Please reiterate your issues.

I think I spotted One

Right click desktop, unlock widgets, add widget, add ‘Folder View’

You can configure the folder with the handle that is on it when you hover over it, when done, lock widgets

Sorry if I was not clear earlier, but if you look at the screenshot I gave you, you can see how the panel at the bottom with the opensuse icon, the applications I have open, etc. (the taskbar) takes up only half of my screen. It is supposed to take up the whole bottom.

Thanks for all the help so far!

Right click Unlock widget
Click the small cashew icon on the right end of the panel
It will expand and you should now see slider arrows in the next section up, adjust to fit - Lock widgets

Thank you so much cat!

I fixed the problem by the settings, maximize panel.

You have fixed all the problems I had!

See, this is why I’m starting to prefer opensuse over Windows. The great customer service.

Excellent! Happy to help;)
I’ll put a gold star on lapel for this thenlol!
